East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust was formed in 2003 from the merger of Blackburn, Hyndburn and Ribble Valley NHS Trust and the Burnley Hospitals NHS Trust. East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust provides a caring service to a population of approximately 550,000.
Services are provided from two main sites, the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital and Burnley General Teaching Hospital.The Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital and Phase V at Burnley General Teaching Hospital are significant PFI developments.
In 2006 a service reconfiguration, 'meeting patients needs' was implemented which resulted in the Blackburn site becoming the centre for all acute services in East Lancashire. The ED at Blackburn is the only ED for East Lancashire and since 2012 has become a Trauma Unit in the Lancashire Trauma network with the trauma centre at the Royal Preston Hospital. The ED is supported by Urgent Care Centres at Blackburn and Burnley and a Minor Injuries Unit at Accrington.
Burnley is the site for the East Lancashire Women and Newborn Centre with an in-patient obstetric unit. There is a midwife led birthing unit off the Hospital site in Blackburn
In 2012 the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital was designated as one of the Lancashire Vascular Centres.
The Trust has close links with a number of Tertiary Centres in Lancashire, Manchester and Liverpool.
We are now looking for a Specialist in Urology to support our Consultant team.
Main duties of the job
We are looking for an enthusiastic clinician to take on the new role of a Specialist in Urology providing expertise in a specialised (including benign prostate disease and functional urology/urodynamics), and generalist service and be able to manage a full range of presentations independently. The individual will have the necessary Urology skills to support the team in both clinic and theatre management. The timetable would include independent clinics, theatre lists and consultant level on call commitments.
The post holder will be expected to work closely with colleagues and management in developing the ability of the department to respond to operational pressures together with clinical governance and longer-term service strategies. The Specialist will also have additional roles within their portfolio, much the same as consultants do, in areas such as governance, service development, research or education. The trust SAS tutor (Mr Ravi Goel) and the Urology departmental SAS lead/advocate (Mr Khaled Hosny) are aware of this post and will be providing departmental and trust level support for the successful candidate to develop and progress their career.
About us
In 2006 the two departments of Urology merged into a single unit with all inpatients based on the Blackburn site.
The department in Blackburn is a fully integrated Urology outpatients, ward and offices, all of which are contained in a dedicated unit. The theatre complex is on the floor below with two theatres mainly serving Urology. The Urology ward is based on B14. The dedicated Urology outpatient's suite has facilities for flexible cystoscopies and transrectal ultrasound and prostate biopsies (TRUS). The department also has a Holmium:YAG laser machines that are used for endourology and for treatment of bladder tumours via flexible cystoscopy. In In addition, there is a TULA laser machine to enable flexible cystoscopy and bladder tumour ablations procedures
The trust has two NHS commissioned da Vinci robots (at Royal Blackburn Hospital and Burnley General Hospital) which are used for radical prostatectomies, partial nephrectomies and complex benign urological procedures.
The consultants are supported by 8 registrar level (ST3+, SCF, Specialty doctor). The department is also supported by 1 CT1, 2 FY2's and 3 FY1's.
On the Burnley site there is a new state of the art, purpose-built Urology Investigations Unit (UIU) where flexible cystoscopy, urodynamics, TULA laser ablations and perineal precision point prostate biopsy sessions are performed. Some inpatient work and day case surgery is performed in the Elective Surgical Centre.

This appointment will enable the Specialist in Urology to participate in the 1:8 on-call consultant rota with registrar level grade cover. The department is actively looking to expand and is likely to be advertising further substantive posts in the near future.
The job plan is 10 PAs annualised with ample scope to increase to 12 PAs by mutual agreement based on the needs of the department. It is also expected that the colleague will undertake a job plan review/job diary within 6 months of commencing to ensure it is appropriate and being correctly renumerated.
Working with the existing colleagues, the successful candidate is expected to retain a commitment to provide core urological services and participate in the urological on-call rota. Appropriate mentoring and support mechanisms are already in place and will be provided by members of the existing multidisciplinary team. The candidate will be provided the opportunity and support to develop additional specialist interests including benign prostate disease management including minimally invasive surgical procedures (TURP, REZUM, Urolift) and functional urology including urodynamics within the department.
Included in this 10PA job plan there is a once per month mandatory Directorate meeting session (Audit, Governance and Directorate Meeting lasting 3.5 hours- fourth Thursday of month PM) that equates to 0.2 SPA annualised. Predictable on call/ Unpredictable on call is referenced within this job plan. The overnight and weekend on call is 1:8 consultant urology on call rota. On call intensity supplement will be Category A: 3%
