Job summary
The Midwifery Support Worker (MSW) will function as part of the Multi-disciplinary team within the ward department to provide a seamless service and high quality care to patients under the direct supervision of a Registered Midwife. The MSW is expected to undertake care to meet the needs of the patients under the supervision of a qualified Midwife, working within the Trust's policies and procedures and the philosophy of the ward.
Main duties of the job
As a Maternity Support Worker you will support midwives in the delivery of integrated maternity services to women and their families during pregnancy, labour and the postnatal period. As part of the role you will liaise with a number of community and hospital-based services to enhance the service offered to women and their families through the direct delivery of care, and as a point of contact for support or signposting.

Clinical Duties
- At all times maintain the dignity and respect of patients
- Assist and support mothers in feeding their babies
- Assis in the admission process by accurately recording patients demographic details
- To assist patients with personal and oral hygiene as instructed
- Monitoring and accurate recording of dietary and fluid intake appropriately responding any abnormalities to the midwife in charge
- Collecting and disposing of body waste
- Testing urine and stool specimens & accurately record results
- Learning to run in maternity theatres and support the theatre team during elective and emergency procedures
- Removal of female indwelling urethral catheters
- Obtain specimens and process specimens to the laboratory
- Remove dressings as instructed
- Perform simple dressing using aseptic technique, in accordance with competency level as instructed
- Taking and recording of temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, oxygen saturation and pain scores on instruction from the Registered Midwife. Accurately recording the results and reposting significant findings
- Under the supervision of a Registered Midwife, support patients undergoing clinical procedures ensuring their dignity, respect, comfort and safety
- Orientate new patient to the ward or department
- Undertake equipment safety checks
- Escort patients to theatre
- Participate on enhanced observations of patients
- Remove peripheral cannulas from patients
