Job summary

The post holder will work in partnership with the Urology Management and Cancer Services team within North Bristol Trust in the review, progression and analysis of patient pathways for each cancer metric. The post holder will support the Performance and Operations Manager to maximise the benefits of the service delivery across all sub-specialty areas.

The post holder will take responsibility for facilitating the smooth and timely running of the patient journey by ensuring that coordinated and streamlined clinical and administrative processes revolve around the patient and their individual needs, including the diagnostic pathway.

The post holder will have a working knowledge of cancer and RTT pathways and national targets and will work to develop and embed a culture of continuous improvement within the clinical and administrative teams.

The post holder will be expected to deliver highly effective cancer and RTT pathways by supporting the work in a collaborative and supportive environment.

The individual must have excellent communication skills and the ability to influence across a multi-disciplinary team including consultants, junior doctors, specialist nurses, theatre teams, admin staff and managers to help resolve operational issues that arise. The ideal post holder will be intelligent, hard-working and able to deal with pressure, as well as having an acute attention to detail and effective problem-solving skills.

Main duties of the job

  • To manage all escalations coming into the specialty from Cancer Services to ensure they are shared and actioned appropriately
  • To prepare for and attend weekly meetings with cancer and RTT stakeholders, communicating with multi-disciplinary teams to achieve the Trust standards
  • To have an understanding of cancer breaches to identify capacity and pathway issues and proactively develop plans to improve performance working alongside relevant managers and clinical teams
  • To manage and maintain the cancer performance dashboard to enable better reporting and understanding of issues, communicating these to the Performance and Operations Manager and General Manager appropriately
  • To oversee the operational management of all cancer and RTT breaches/pathways including fast track queries and clinic management
  • To review and manage the DM01 position, reporting areas of concerns or challenges to the Performance and Operations Manager
  • To ensure proactive management of performance in alignment with specialty priorities and Trust targets

Main Duties:

  • Motivate, influence, inspire and lead others to improve cancer and RTT pathways and performance to meet the national standards through successful communication, negotiation, and persuasive skills to reach agreement on the required improvements.
  • Maintain, sustain and develop effective communication channels and collaborative working relationships with staff in specific specialty areas.
  • To work closely with the cancer services team to ensure the PTLs run smoothly with a clear understanding of the portfolio of patients and pathways within it. To ensure all pathways are progressed appropriately and timely.
  • To manage all escalations coming into the specialty from Cancer Services to ensure they are shared and actioned appropriately
  • To prepare for and attend weekly meetings with cancer and RTT stakeholders, communicating with multi-disciplinary teams to achieve the Trust standards
  • To undertake pathway reviews of all breaching cancer patients across the cancer metrics on a monthly basis, producing flow diagrams, reports and presentations based on a range of information relating to the cancer pathway.
  • To have an understanding of cancer breaches to identify capacity and pathway issues and proactively develop plans to improve performance working alongside relevant managers and clinical teams
  • To review and manage weekly thematic reviews of all breaches 62+ days
  • To manage and maintain the cancer performance dashboard to enable better reporting and understanding of issues, communicating these to the Performance and Operations Manager and General Manager appropriately
  • To oversee the operational management of all cancer and RTT breaches/pathways including fast track queries and clinic management
  • To review and manage the DM01 position, reporting areas of concerns or challenges to the Performance and Operations Manager

  • To work closely with the Outpatient team and Cancer Services to monitor demand for two week wait outpatient services, planning capacity to meet this demand and highlighting potential shortfalls in capacity to the line manager and clinical team
  • To ensure patients waiting for treatment are managed in chronological order, within clinical priority, and treated within maximum and clinically appropriate waiting times
  • To ensure booking teams work to the Trusts patient access policy and booking standards
  • To attend relevant Trust/Directorate performance meetings including cancer and 18-week PTL meetings
  • To represent and deputise for the Performance and Operations Manager as required

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the Directorate and Trust objectives.
