Senior Home Therapy Dialysis Assistant

The Berkshire Kidney Unit: University department of Renal Medicine cares for Adult patients with Renal disease across Berkshire. The Renal home therapy team based at the RBH site provide a variety of services both on site & within the community. We are looking for a Health Care Assistant (HCA) to join our Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) team.

This is a unique role for a Health care assistant, they will be required to travel across East & West Berkshire, providing dialysis related care in the patients homes to our Assisted Automated peritoneal dialysis (aAPD) patients. Plus occasionally working within the Renal Home Therapy nursing team back at the RBH performing similar tasks for the wider Peritoneal dialysis patient cohort. An exciting opportunity to work both alone in the community and as part of the wider RBH renal team.

Main duties of the job

This service is provided 365 days a year, requires rostered weekend working but actual working hours have some degree of flexibility, visits done between 9am-3pm ect. Hours per shift range from 4-6hrs depending on roster.

The candidate will need to be able to travel to the patients homes ( area covered M4 corridor junction 4/5 - 14)

Community visits involve set up, dismantling & disposal of dialysis machine & associated equipment performing both manual & automated peritoneal dialysis, stock control, clinical observations, liaising with the on-site Nursing renal team & caring for the dialysis device. Duties back at the RBH are similar.

Predominately a lone working role, under the instruction/ guidance of the trained Renal Nursing staff. Care is usually performed in the patient's own homes, with occasional need to perform the Renal skills in a nursing home or respite establishment depends on where patient is residing.

All appropriate training provided and competency based assessments will need to be completed, plus a period of supervised practice before any lone working can take place. Previous caring experience will be an advantage but not essential.

Please Note this Health care assistant role does not involve personal care such as washing, dressing or feeding the patient.

While being employed by Renal Home therapy (RHT) Team the home based side of Renal services the candidate will also be part of the wider Renal services and the RBH trust & in turn will be expected to live out the trust care values.

RHT as a whole is predominately nurse-led, Mon-Fri service, that provides education, care & support to patients in their own homes during the decline of their renal function, while on PD, post kidney Transplantation or collaboratively with the GPs trying to prevent or slow renal disease. The HT nursing team work very autonomously but in collaboration with the wider Multi-disciplinary team and Renal Consultants.
