Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a COPD nurse to work within our respiratory specialist nurse team at South Tyneside and Sunderland Hospitals. The COPD nurse will work within the well-established nurse team for COPD patient care, leading the management and care delivery for patients diagnosed with COPD. The COPD nurse role will consist of providing expert clinical knowledge to patients, with COPD and supporting those patients who are newly-diagnosed COPD.

We would expect you to have substantial respiratory experience, with the Clinical Skills or working towards Clinical Skills Course. Able to take capillary blood gases, given nebuliser trial, and have undertaken smoking cessation training. Have an understanding of the importance of inhaler technique and able to implement self-management plans.

You must be able to demonstrate the ability to work as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team, having excellent clinical skills to deliver exceptional standards of care for all patients and their families. You must be well-organised and enthusiastic in participating with service development through audit and peer review. Main duties of the job

Ensure that safe, effective and holistic patient care is delivered, and co-ordinate patients' overall plan of care throughout the patient journey.

Assess and plan patients' care needs in an accurate and timely way, implement and evaluate the planned care using a holistic approach.

Identify any additional needs of the patient/carer and refer to appropriate member of the multi-agency /multi-professional team via the agreed pathways. Making reasonable adjustments to maximise the patients' experience.

Accurately observe and record patient's clinical condition, and initiate appropriate action, or escalate as required.

Accountable for safe administration of drugs in accordance with NMC guidelines for administration of medicines and STSFT Policies.

Accountable for accurate nursing records are kept in-line with NMC guidelines on records and record keeping, and Trust record keeping policy.

Promote excellence in nursing care, and demonstrate evidence-based best practice.

Undertake diagnostic tests required in Chest Clinic, Spirometry, FeNO, Capillary Blood gases, IV drug administration.

Assist medics with pleural procedures.
