MID ESSEX HOSPITAL SERVICES NHS TRUST
BROOMFIELD HOSPITAL

CONSULTANT IN RADIOLOGY
with an interest in Vascular and Non-Vascular Interventional Radiology

NHS Jobs Ref: 288-MED-464

Applications are invited for a new post of Consultant Radiologist with an interest in Vascular and Non-Vascular Interventional Radiology. This post has been created to support the existing team across the working week, and further the expansion of interventional radiology services.

This opportunity comes at an exciting time for acute services in Essex. Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust (MEHT), Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (BTUH) and Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (SUHT) have formed a partnership in the Mid and South Essex Success Regime with a catchment population of 1.2 million. The three Trusts are separate entities, but with one unified Joint Executive Group. As one of three such regimes in the country, now incorporated in the local Sustainability and Transformation Programme, the Trusts are joining forces with primary care and neighbouring community Trusts to secure high quality, joined-up care across healthcare networks to make dramatic improvement to patient care and access to services.

The joint vision of the interventional radiology (IR) units in all three Trusts is to develop a 24/7 network solution for IR emergencies and a collaborative approach to the delivery of IR services across the region. Vascular surgery and interventional radiology are both a priority for the Success Regime, and it has been decided that IR services will be maintained at all three sites to support the reconfiguration of dependent medical and surgical specialities.

    • During the reconfiguration phase of the Success regime, an emergency hub for out of hours vascular and non-vascular IR will be established at the Basildon site. IR consultants from all 3 sites will contribute to the out of hours rota. The other two sites will continue to undertake in hours emergencies and all three sites will undertake elective IR activity.

    • The network is anticipated to evolve into a 24/7 emergency IR hub with elective IR retained at the spokes.

The post will be based at Broomfield Hospital with On Call Commitments at Basildon Hospital

    • There will be staged new and replacement appointments to the region to join the current eight vascular IR and two non-vascular IR consultants.

    • The intention is to create a team of at least nine vascular and non-vascular trained IR consultants (at least three per site) able to contribute to a comprehensive 1:9 emergency rota, and meet the regional elective IR needs now and in the medium term.

    • All the existing IR consultants are committed to team working across the three sites. Each consultant will be based at one site, and would travel to the hub (or one other site); however it is not envisaged that any one consultant would work across all three sites.

This post would suit either an established IR Consultant looking for new challenges, or a fellowship trained IR looking for a first consultant post.

    • Full GMC registration or evidence of eligibility for full GMC registration is required, as is evidence of appropriate/fellowship training in Interventional Radiology.

    • We are keen to recruit consultants who can demonstrate that they are passionate about patient care and safety, show an understanding and awareness of governance with a desire to improve the patient experience.

    • The Trust fully supports the British Society of Interventional Radiology’s aim of IR consultants being clinically responsible for their patients, with dedicated IR clinics and day case beds.

    • You will take an active role in the running and development of our IR service. As part of the agreed job plan, you will be expected to join the interventional radiology on-call rota. A flexible approach to job planning will be adopted based on service requirements.
