NHS Blood and Transplant is an integral part of the NHS, collecting and processing 2 million blood donations a year. Our Healthcare Scientists provide crucial support to NHS Hospitals, processing, testing and issuing blood and its components and delivering diagnostic and therapeutic services relating to the transfusion of blood and stem cells, transplantation and tissue banking.

The Cellular and Molecular Therapies (CMT) function of NHSBT comprises 8 laboratories throughout the country, developing and delivering a range of life saving therapies. The post gives an opportunity for a Cell Therapy Advanced Specialist to play a key role in the delivery of novel cellular therapies (ATMPs). We are therefore looking for someone who is:

  • An experienced scientist with specialised laboratory knowledge, in particular experience in cell culture would be valuable.
  • Someone able to undertake complex testing and processing of cells for therapeutic clinical use using highly scientific equipment such as flow cytometers and cell selection protocols.
  • Willing to travel and work in collaboration on projects in other NHSBT locations such as Liverpool and Birmingham.
  • Able to undertake analysis of logistics and supply chain factors important for the delivery of ATMPs
  • Capable of ensuring cells and/or tissue products meet all specifications necessary for patient safety and therapeutic use according to internal and external quality requirements.
  • Able to move to Barnsley in 2020 when the NHSBT Leeds and Sheffield Centres are relocated there.

The normal working hours for this role is 37.5 hours, Monday – Friday. However, this may involve occasional evening and weekend working - this will be project specific.
