Biomedical Scientist opportunities

Use specialist techniques to support blood transfusions. It’s challenging work that saves lives.

We have an opportunity for an HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist Practitioner with a specialist diploma or relevant post graduate experience to join our Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (H&I) Laboratory, at NHSBT Filton, Bristol. This is a purpose built, state-of-the art building utilising the most up to date technology. Our laboratory carries out testing for stem cell transplantation, post-transplant monitoring and immunogenetic testing for the South West. We are also the national platelet and granulocyte immunology laboratory, carrying out serological investigations for the support of a variety of allo/auto immune conditions.

You will join our friendly team and play an important role performing, analysing and interpreting a wide range of specialist scientific and technical procedures and investigations relating to the issue of results for transplant patients and donors impacting directly on patient care. In addition, you will be involved with the supply of HPA selected platelet units. You will contribute to the coordination and supervision of the work, training of scientific and support staff. We will provide you with extensive induction and training and ongoing development to support you in this role and achieve your career ambitions.

It would be beneficial to your application if you hold a relevant science or specialist qualification in H&I such as the BSHI Diploma or equivalent relevant experience. Please note, this role may be subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

The normal working hours for this role are Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per week.

For informal enquires/to arrange a visit to the laboratory please contact Elizabeth Wroe or Anthony Calvert - Clinical Scientist Section Leaders, via email at:

The advert will close for applications at 23:59 pm on Wednesday 29th January 2020 with interviews anticipated to take place on Tuesday 11th February 2020, subject to confirmation.

Tier 2 Certificate of Sponsorship

Applications from job seekers who require Tier 2 sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. However, non-EEA candidates may not be appointed to a post if a suitably qualified, experienced and skilled EU/EEA candidate is available to take up the post as the employing body is unlikely, in these circumstances, to satisfy the Resident Labour Market Test. The UK Visas and Immigration department requires employers to complete this test to show that no suitably qualified EEA or EU worker can fill the post. For further information please visit the UK Visas and Immigration website.

From 6 April 2017, Tier 2 skilled worker applicants, applying for entry clearance into the UK, must present a criminal record certificate from each country they have resided continuously or cumulatively for 12 months or more in the past 10 years. Adult dependants (over 18 years old) will also be subject to this requirement.

Guidance can be found here Criminal Records Checks For Overseas Applicants

UK Registration

Applicants must have current UK professional registration. For further information please see applying from overseas.
