Production Manager with Pathology First

£61,777 - £72,597 per annum

The Production Manager is a key part of the Senior Management Team at Pathology First, along with the General Manager & Deputy General Manager. Main responsibilities for this position are as follows:

  • To ensure that the Pathology First Hub and Essential Services Laboratories (ESL’s) operate professionally and are efficient to the required standards as well as functioning within budget.
  • That the managerial and governance arrangements within each pathology discipline to ensure SYNLAB can effectively discharge its responsibilities and then managing service.
  • Promote culture of continuous improvement which embraces change and utilises either SYNLABs Project Management or SYNLAB Transformation Systems methodologies as appropriate.

Other duties include:

  • Representing SYNLAB at internal and external meetings and may at times deputise in the absence of both the General Manager and Deputy General Manager.
  • Responsible for a broad range of diagnostic laboratory services, including services which are likely to be outside of their chosen specialism (e.g. Histopathology and Microbiology); you will need to keep abreast with developments across all diagnostic pathology disciplines, utilising the subject matter expert knowledge within SYNLAB and its partners, to engage and lead with credibility. You will be expected to advise of and recommend changes, improvements and new developments to the General Manager and other relevant stake holders; ensuring internal procedures for the approval of change are followed accordingly (e.g. business case, variation to contract).
  • Line Management as well as building internal stakeholder relationships across departments (Finance, HR, IT etc).

Desired Skills and Experience

  • HCPC registered biomedical scientist with highly developed expert knowledge in either Chemistry, Haematology or Blood Transfusion.
  • Qualified to MSc, Higher Specialist Diploma level or Fellowship of the IBMS, with evidence of appropriate Continuous Professional Development.
  • Experience of both leading substantial change projects and delivering continuous improvement.
  • Evidence of knowledge of production methodologies and able to demonstrate their application in a laboratory environment.
  • Experience of Major Incident and Recovery planning; preferably with experience of responding to major incident at Silver Command level or above.
  • Experience of managing a significant budget and successfully achieving financial targets

Pathology First was formed in 2014 and is a joint venture between Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and private sector partners – SYNLAB. Pathology First delivers full laboratory services to a population of 750,000 patients and over 250 GP practices across 6 CCG’s in the South East.
