Applications are invited for Specialist Biomedical Scientists (Band 6) or Entry Level Biomedical Scientists (Band 5) and students nearing the completion of their degree who have attained the IBMS certificate of competence. Applicants must have experience of working within an NHS laboratory.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Specialist Biomedical Scientist or an Entry Level state registered BMS who is professional, reliable, innovative and flexible to join our friendly and hard working team. This department offers training and development opportunities for the right candidates to further develop their skills and ambition.

Biochemistry at The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust is part of the Blood Sciences department of Barnsley and Rotherham Integrated Laboratory Services. This modern department offers a wide range of diagnostic testing facilities for Rotherham and Barnsley Hospitals as well as local GP practices. The department is accreditation to ISO15189 standards and is an IBMS accredited training laboratory.

We are fully automated with a Siemens VersaCell linking Advia 1800s and Centaur XP’s and will shortly be transitioning to Siemens Atellica Solutions. In addition, the Department provides an array of HPLC testing and supports Point of Care testing within the Trust for blood gas, glucose, urinalysis and pregnancy testing. We work closely with the Immunology department and there may be an opportunity to rotate into this section.

All the analysers are linked to the Clinisys Enterprise LIMS system.

Ideally the successful candidate will be state registered with Health and Care Professions Council, will have post registration experience in an NHS Biochemistry laboratory and hold the IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Biochemistry or equivalent (Band 6). However, applications from Entry Level Biomedical Scientists and students nearing the completion of their degree who have attained the IBMS certificate of competence will also be considered (Band 5).

Once trained you will be committed to supporting the 24/7 out of hours service.

The post is based at Rotherham Hospital but the successful candidate may also benefit from working at our partner laboratory in Barnsley.

Rotherham Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is situated close to the Derbyshire Peak District and is within easy reach of the major cities of Sheffield and Leeds. Local social, cultural and sporting activities are in plentiful supply and there is a good choice of schools in both the public and private sectors. South Yorkshire is well located for easy travel to most parts of the country via good road and rail networks.

The Rotherham Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is currently one of five Trusts involved in the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Pathology Transformation Programme. The aim is to design a Pathology Service that provides all SYB patients and clinicians with equitable access to high-quality, innovative laboratory medicine solutions that will ensure the best clinical outcomes for patients. The service will also be efficient and sustainable, encourage research and development in collaboration with Academia and Industry to improve health and innovation in the region and provide rewarding jobs and career opportunities for all staff.

The cost of undertaking a DBS disclosure will be met by the individual. The Trust will meet the initial costs of the disclosure, and you can choose to have this deducted from either your first month’s salary or in instalments over your first 3 months’ salary. The current price of a standard check is £23 and an enhanced check is £40.
