Staff Nurse

Cardio-Respiratory Rotation

Opportunity to join the cardio-respiratory team at GOSH to complete a two year rotational programme between Leopard, Kangaroo and Bear Ward.

Bear Ward: 24 bedded ward, 8 HDU beds. Mixture of cardiology, pulmonary hypertension, tracheal and thoracic patients.

Leopard Ward: 14 bedded ward. 4 HDU beds. Acute respiratory ward caring for Cystic Fibrosis, invasive and non-invasive ventilation, chest drains, optiflow and complex respiratory conditions.

Kangaroo Ward: 9 bedded ward caring for patients with long term ventilation and complex care needs transitioning from hospital to home. There is also a dedicated sleep study bed. All wards work closely with PICU, NICU and CICU and the movement of patients to and from these areas.

  • Protected study time – respiratory and cardiac foundation courses, HDU study days, team away days
  • Opportunity to develop skills involving the management of deteriorating patients, ventilation, chest drains, post-operative care, complex discharges, child development and inotropes.
  • Exposure to ventricular assisted devices, cardiac catheter procedures, pre and post
    transplant care (heart and lung).
  • 1:1 meetings with ward manager every 3 months, with structured feedback
  • Ward level educational support on shift
  • Completion of competency documents

  • Opportunities to develop post rotation – university modules, junior sister posts, practice facilitator posts, clinical nurse specialist roles.
