The role

This is an exciting new role, you will be part of a team of trainees that we will develop to become a qualified Approved Clinician (AC) within 2 years of commencing your role.

You will use your specialist clinical knowledge to undertake the key tasks of your role which will include the assessment and treatment of own complex caseload of patients, you will provide expert professional advice to patients, carers and colleagues and undertake research in your specialist area.

During your training you will be expected to develop the eight core competencies of an Approved Clinician (AC), accessing support from the Strategic Lead: Multi-Professional Approved Clinicians in order to broaden your clinical experience and develop a Portfolio of evidence for a Regional Panel within 2 years.

The role you will develop into will help to change and improve lives of the people we care for. You will become an integral part of the Devon Partnership NHS Trust team, playing a key role in an award-winning organisation that is committed to delivering the highest quality of care across Devon.

About you

Educated to minimum of Masters Degree level (or equivalent), you will be an experienced mental health professional in one of the following groups: A Practitioner Psychologist; a First Level Nurse, An Occupational Therapist, A Social Worker. You will also need to have a minimum of 5 years post professional clinical experience in your current profession at a senior position. All Approved Clinicians must have a minimum of 7 years post-registration experience in mental health.

You will need to demonstrate expert clinical knowledge at advanced practice level in the area of care delivery for service users and have substantial evidence –based practice relevant to the role.

Personally, the ability to communicate effectively at all levels, especially in respect of decision-making along with proven ability to produce quality written reports are pre-requisites of this role. In addition you will need to provide effective clinical leadership skills that are capable of establishing direction and purpose within a complex organisational structure.


The roles will be based across the Trust in Core Services, Specialist or Secure.

As a new member of staff to Devon Partnership NHS Trust you will be required to attend a full induction programme at the beginning of your employment. The content and length of this programme will depend on your new job role and where you will be working. This can be between one day for non-clinical staff and up to 10 days for inpatient clinical staff.
