BRADFORD TEACHING HOSPITALS NHS FOUNDATION TRUST

CONSULTANT IN HAEMATOLOGY

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Haematology at Bradford Teaching Hospitals. This is a 10PA post in Haematology with the possibility of a second additional post in the near future.  Bradford is situated in a truly beautiful area of the world with easy access to the Pennines, Yorkshire Dales and North Yorkshire Moors.  There are excellent schools and facilities in the region.

The Haematology Team in Bradford has an extremely strong ethos on caring for patients and caring for each other.  It believes in delivering the highest and best standards of care and this goal is achieved best by supporting staff in the team reaching their full potential.  Consultants with a family or who would wish to work part-time or as a job share would be very welcome to apply.  The team work very closely together to ensure that specialist interests in specific areas can be developed and supported though study leave, mentoring and external training.  There are many potential opportunities in career development available and anyone interested in joining one of the kindest teams in the country (in our opinion!) would be encouraged to phone Dr Ackroyd or Dr Garg to discuss (numbers below – please ring with any questions).

Bradford hospital is a large teaching hospital and teaching opportunities are abundant for the successful candidate.  The department has medical students and also does lectures for medical students in Leeds.  There is a large simulation training centre with a SIM-MAN and clinical rooms.  The department runs twice yearly simulation training for the Yorkshire Region including specialist coagulation practical training.  Further development of training is possible.

The department has a staff of 7 Consultant haematologists, 2 Specialty Doctors, 3 Specialty Registrar FY1, FY2 and CT doctors.  There is a designated haematology ward with all en-suite side rooms and a treatment room.  The doctors are supported by a team of 4 Acute Oncology Nurses, 3 malignant CNS, 2 non-malignant CNS, 3 transfusion CNS, 1 thrombosis CNS, 3 research CNS and an amazing dedicated team of nurses on the ward and day unit.  Treatment offered is to BCSH level 2c including ALL, AML and high grade lymphomas.  All Consultants sub-specialise with cross cover and opportunities exist to influence what sub-specialty the applicant may wish to develop whether malignant or non-malignant.  Clinics are disease specific (e.g. Myeloid, Lymphoma, Thrombosis, ITP, Paediatric, Obstetric etc.) and usually have at least 2 Consultants in to enable appropriate cover arrangements.

There is a large Haemophilia Centre with special interest in rare coagulation and platelet disorders. It forms part of the regional haemophilia network with Leeds and York (NWYHN).  MDTs are held every 8 weeks and there is 24/7 Haemophilia Consultant on-call cover for the region separate to the local on-call arrangements.

The haematology department is very fortunate to have excellent supportive services as you would expect for a large teaching hospital including hepatology, microbiology, palliative care and interventional radiology.

The department follows the “acute consultant of the week” model with a 1:6 rota where clinics and management responsibilities are cut to enable acute work.  The other Consultants continue their twice weekly patient reviews as this is part of providing continuity to the patients with a big focus on patient care.  Consultants support each other in the acute role including a weekly MDT Grand Round, so there is always someone to call or discuss cases with.

There is a 1:7 on-call rota which is worked from home with middle grade cover for Bradford patients who do the weekend ward rounds and see acute patients out of hours.

There is a haematology research team within the modern Bradford Institute of Health Research at the hospital and includes 3 CNS and 3 part time Admin support staff.  Research interests are encouraged and supported through training.

Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides acute services for the City of Bradford and surrounding areas, and has two large Hospitals; Bradford Royal Infirmary and St. Luke’s Hospital. All main specialties are represented in Bradford, and the Trust has a base of 900 beds. For further information regarding the Trust please go to: www. bradfordhospitals .nhs.uk.

The Trust is committed to improving the working lives of its staff; we aim for a flexible approach to working hours, and have a number of family friendly policies.

For further information regarding this post please contact the Dr Anshu Garg, Speciality Lead Haematology Service on 07960 548285 or Dr Sam Ackroyd  Clinical Director on 07414 773407.

Short-listed candidates are encouraged to visit by prior appointment.
