This is an exciting opportunity for a Consultant Rheumatologist to join our busy, innovative and friendly team to enhance Rheumatology services across South Somerset.

This is a newly created post and reflects the increase in workload in both Rheumatology and Acute Medicine including the increasing demand in neighbouring Trusts. The Rheumatology department also works closely with neighbouring departments in Bristol.

You would join the Rheumatology team of one full-time Consultant and one part-time Consultant

You could also possibly join three full-time Consultant Acute Physicians and two part time Associate Specialists to create a team of five, working within the Emergency Admissions Unit, Emergency Department and AEC. There is currently a review of the Acute Medicine service to ensure the consultant staffing levels match the needs of the service.

This is a permanent post and we are offering the following options:

Option 1 - 10 PAs for Rheumatology and Acute Medicine

OR

Option 2 - 8 PAs solely in Rheumatology.

About the department:

The Rheumatology Department is based in Level 2 of the hospital and has a multi-disciplinary team of Doctors, Specialist Nurses, Physiotherapists, Radiographers, Pharmacists and Administrative Staff.

The Department currently has two Nurse Specialists and a Pharmacist that run clinics and a telephone advice service for existing patients with inflammatory arthritis.

Two Nurse Specialists and a Pharmacist run clinics and a telephone advice service for existing patients with inflammatory arthritis.

Outpatient clinics are held on Level 3 and Level 2 at Yeovil District Hospital and at nearby Community Hospitals.

Patients can be referred from GP practices for diagnosis, treatment and when appropriate, long-term management of patients with a range of musculoskeletal disorders including inflammatory arthritis, soft tissue rheumatism, osteoarthritis, connective tissue diseases and osteoporosis.

The department has been successful in being accredited for provision of specialist training, linking in with the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases in Bath, United Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust and North Bristol NHS Trust. A Rheumatology Registrar (ST3) on rotation from Bristol and Bath, performs clinics alongside both consultants, working with the team as part of the Severn Deanery rotations. There is the opportunity to attend the postgraduate education program in Bath and Bristol.

The department Specialist Physiotherapist assesses and treats patients with inflammatory arthritis and Ankylosing Spondylitis in the therapy department and has a joint injection clinic in the Outpatients’ department. There is a monthly specialist Ankylosing Spondylitis clinic run in conjunction with this post and the specialist Physiotherapist. The department also has a specialist Occupational Therapist with an interest in hand therapy who works closely with the team to support outpatients, and who attends regular multidisciplinary case conferences and team meetings.

An Osteoporosis Nurse Specialist in charge of assessing patients at risk of fracture, and advising appropriate investigations and treatment is in post. They run nurse-led clinics to manage, review and oversee osteoporosis treatments that are based in secondary care and provides a telephone advice service as well as written advice and guidance for primary care. They run an education session at the hospital twice a year for patients who have been diagnosed with osteoporosis or osteopenia. The Bone Densitometry Unit is staffed by dedicated Radiographers. This offers scanning 5 days per week with Nurse led clinical assessment for non-complex cases. The osteoporosis service is overseen by this post, and there are weekly meetings with the Osteoporosis Nurse Specialist to discuss complex cases.

The Trust has an Ambulatory Care Unit to provide a dedicated space in which to undertake infusions. There are strong links with Pharmacy Services, to support new developments in prescribing and treatment for Rheumatology patients.

The Acute Medicine team provides cutting edge, safe, high-quality care for acute unscheduled medical patients.

It is an extremely exciting time to join Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation as we have established a highly successful Ambulatory Emergency Care Unit, supported by Advanced Nurse Practitioners. This is co-located with the Emergency Department and sees all ambulant patients referred to us by their GP as well as other patients
