Mid and South Essex health and social care organisations serve a population of around 1.2 million people. Within the health system currently, there are three acute hospitals trusts including Basildon & Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Mid Essex Hospitals NHS Trust and Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust with a combined income of c£945 million. Recognising that greater collaboration across this part of Essex is required to solve long standing financial, quality and operational challenges, agreement was reached in a number of stages since 2017 to work in an increasingly collaborative way between the Trusts to undertake the reconfiguration of clinical services, supported by an "in common" governance and leadership structure. Since early 2017 we have benefitted from a single executive team across the three organisations. Since January 2019, all of our Trust Boards and our committees meet "in common" only as a matter of course.

In January 2018, the Trust Boards with support from commissioners and from our regulators including NHS Improvement, to pursue a merger of the three organisations. Subject to regulatory approval, we will merge in April 2020 to become Mid & South Essex University Hospitals – a new single organisation, having university teaching and NHS foundation trust status. The new organisation presents an ideal opportunity for you to take a leading and influential role both internally and externally within a health and social care system

We offer an extensive range of acute healthcare services at Basildon University Hospital, Orsett Hospital and the St Andrew’s Centre in Billericay. We also provide specialist cardiothoracic services for the whole of Essex and further afield at The Essex Cardiothoracic Centre, which has a reputation for leading developments in cardiac surgery and cardiology procedures.

Basildon Hospital is the Main District General Hospital for South West Essex and operates from two sites, Basildon University Hospital and Orsett Hospital. We primarily serve the 405,800 population of South-West Essex covering Basildon and Thurrock, together with parts of Brentwood and Castle Point. Basildon Hospital is situated in the town of Basildon and provides acute hospital services for the people of Basildon and Thurrock some of Brentwood and surrounding areas.

Basildon and Thurrock Theatre department has 14 operating theatres, 4 Recovery areas and is a friendly, busy and dynamic Department which operates 24 hours per day 365 days per year and provides a high quality, safe & effective service to all patients who undergo a surgical procedure.

We have an exciting opportunity to join our Theatres Department for Operating Department Practitioners/ Anaesthetic nurses. Due to service expansion in Theatres we are looking for dynamic, flexible and highly motivated individuals who enjoy working in a team and are a seeking a new opportunity.


Individuals will be highly motivated, pro-active team players who possess excellent communication skills. A flexible approach to working is also essential.
We cover a variety of surgery which includes;;
Breast Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Obstetrics, Head and Neck, Urology, general open and Laparoscopic surgery, colo-rectal and ENT, and a new developed MSK service and CEPOD.

There is an opportunity for joint working with the Essex Cardio-thoracic tertiary Centre which is based on the Basildon site.


We also provide a General emergency and obstetric emergency service. As part of the service you will be required to support emergencies and provide on-call cover.

We have close links with Anglia Ruskin University, including supporting pre-registration students of Operating Department Practice Dip HE through their programme of study.
Our recent CQC inspection found us to be ‘providing services that were safe, effective, responsive caring and well-led’.
