The Positive behaviour, Autism, Learning disability, Mental health Service (PALMS) has secured additional funding to support children and young people (CYP) and their families in crisis. We are looking to recruit 4 PALMS Urgent Responders to join our ever growing team as we develop this new pathway. The PALMS’ Urgent Responder is a new role, supported by CAMHS’ Commissioners, in recognition of the need to be increasingly responsive to the needs of the PALMS’ population at times of high distress.

PALMS offers individually tailored support for CYP, aged 0-19 who have a global learning disability and/or Autistic Spectrum Disorder, helping families to manage challenging behaviour and/or to support mental health needs. PALMS aims to keep children and young people with their families within Hertfordshire thereby improving outcomes for all family members. PALMS provides early intervention where necessary and intensive support to families reaching crisis with a step up and step down approach throughout their care journey. Interventions include workshops, groups, individual therapy, and therapeutic work with parents/carers/siblings.

We are seeking to appoint 4 motivated and forward thinking mental health professionals who can work flexibly and are committed to supporting Children and Young People (CYP) and their families across Hertfordshire. We would welcome applications from Mental Health professionals working in a range of settings including Nursing, Clinical Psychology and Social Work.

The ideal candidate will be:

  • Able to provide a comprehensive screening and triage service to children and young people and their referrers resulting in safe and appropriate clinical decisions and appropriate intervention.
  • Able to undertake priority assessments, related to difficulties within the PALMS’ remit, to determine the needs of the CYP, including whether it is safe for them to return to their home.
  • Able to function as an effective member of the multi-disciplinary PALMS team and to work as an autonomous PALMS clinician providing specialist and holistic assessment and intervention, when appropriate, with CYP and families.
  • Able to act as a senior professional in the post holder’s field; providing supervision and training to other PALMS clinicians.
  • Able to maintain a high degree of professionalism when working in settings where there is a highly emotive atmosphere.
  • Flexible in their approach and have resilience under pressure
  • Able to work both in a team environment and autonomously
  • Able to maintain a high degree of professionalism when working in settings where there is a highly emotive atmosphere.

  • Regular appraisal, personal development planning and opportunities for continuing professional development. This includes specific support with regards to fulfilling the PALMS’ role such as co-facilitating workshops.

  • A planned approach to being able to undertake core PALMS Clinical tasks from shadowing through to autonomously undertaking.
  • Opportunities to work closely with a multi-disciplinary team and learn from other evidence based frameworks and approaches.
  • Involvement in service development including undertaking clinical audits, project work and service forums.
  • Opportunities to provide clinical supervision and line management to other members of the PALMS team as appropriate.
  • 27 days annual leave, 29 if you have worked for the NHS for 5 years and 33 if you have worked for the NHS for 10 years, in addition to 8 days bank holidays.

The posts will be Fixed Term for 2 years ending in October 2021 and be based initially in St Albans or Welwyn Garden City, however with all roles in PALMS, travel across Hertfordshire will be required.
