Frenchay Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre in Bristol is the Level 1 service for patients with complex neurological needs for the South West of England. We have 52 rehabilitation beds and offer both Level 1 (intensive) and Level 2 (slower stream) specialist inpatient rehabilitation for patients with acquired or traumatic brain injury and other neurological conditions. The service is run by The Huntercombe Group in partnership with North Bristol NHS trust.

Deputy Lead Physiotherapist (joint post)

THG Grade 6 (does not equate to Agenda for Change Scale)

Pattern of work: Full time or part-time hours considered (minimum of 22.5 hours/week)

Salary: £35,548 - £36,211 – depending on experience.


This role in our inpatient regional neurorehabilitation service is ideal for anyone who has highly specialist physiotherapy skills in the field of neurological rehabilitation and brain injury. You will work with a specialist interdisciplinary team of Doctors, nurses, psychologists, occupational therapists and speech and language therapists.Patients typically have complex physical and cognitive presentations following traumatic or acquired brain injury in addition to other neurological conditions such as Guillain Barré and spinal injury.


Clinical skills required include:

  • Medical and physical management of spasticity including splinting and serial casting
  • Complex postural management
  • Assessment for and provision of orthotics
  • Hydrotherapy
  • Use of equipment such as: the Lite-Gait overhead walking harness and treadmill; Quest electric standing frames; standard and motomed exercise bikes and tilt tables
  • Behavioural management, positive behavioural support plans and techniques
  • Tracheostomy weaning
  • Individualised patient goal setting and outcome measurement

Managerially you will:

  • Deputise for and support the Lead Physiotherapist
  • Take a pro-active role in service development
  • Provide supervision and appraisal for team members
  • Deliver both local in-service and more formal training
  • Be involved in centre wide initiatives
