Come and join our successful stroke team, located on the Norfolk coast within walking distance of long sandy beaches and close to the beautiful Norfolk Broads. The James Paget Hospital has been consistently ranked among the top 100 “Best NHS Providers to work for” in the Health Service Journal, due to its supportive atmosphere and positive management culture. CQC inspection in 2019 rated the hospital “Good” overall, with outstanding leadership in urgent and emergency care.

Stroke Medicine

The successful applicant will join a team of 4 stroke consultants, supported by an enthusiastic multidisciplinary team of nurses and AHPs delivering hyperacute and acute stroke care along with inpatient rehabilitation. We have a strong track record of performance on the national stroke audit (SSNAP), currently scoring a high B.

The Stroke Unit consists of a 5 bed monitored hyperacute area adjacent to a 25 bedded acute and rehabilitation stroke unit. Stroke thrombolysis is provided 24/7 using a regional telemedicine rota out of hours. There is good imaging support with CT, CTA and MRI (DWI) all readily available. TIA assessment including carotid imaging is provided 7 days a week and supported by our team of Band 6 stroke specialist nurses.

A dynamic Early Supported Discharge team enables us to discharge 40% of our new admissions within 72h. The stroke unit has a track record of innovative service improvements, including a popular telephone follow up service for TIA patients and a project to increase the psychology skills of the stroke therapy team. We are also actively involved in stroke research.

The James Paget University Hospital is affiliated with Norwich Medical School at the University of East Anglia and so there is therefore ample opportunity to get involved in teaching.

Prospective candidates should be within 6 months of obtaining a CCT, or be listed on or eligible for the UK Specialist Register at the date of interview.
