Consultant in Respiratory Medicine

Job Reference: 279-MSMW710

Employer:
Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
Department:
Respiratory Medicine
Location:
Worthing Hospital, Worthing
Salary:
£79,860 to £107,668 per annum

Western Sussex Hospitals is a leading acute hospital trust, with rewarding career opportunities for caring, committed and innovative people, who wish to be valued for their work and empowered to improve the services we provide. Here are few reasons to join us:

Outstanding – we are the first acute hospital trust to have received the health watchdog’s highest rating in all key inspection areas. CQC October 2019

Top 10 – Western Sussex Hospitals is one the best hospital trusts to work for, according to the NHS Staff Survey, and among the top ten trusts in England where staff are most likely to recommend the care their colleagues provide. (NHS Staff Survey 2018)

Leading organisation – Western Sussex Hospitals is led by NHS Chief Executive of the Year Dame Marianne Griffiths (HSJ Awards 2016 | No.1 HSJ Top CEO 2018 & 2019) and is renowned for outstanding care, excellent staff engagement, innovation and learning.

Location – our hospitals in Chichester, Worthing and Shoreham-by-Sea are on the beautiful Sussex coast, between the beach and South Downs National Park. West Sussex has wonderful countryside, picturesque villages, vibrant towns, excellent schools and cultural amenities, as well as quick transport links to Brighton, London and beyond.

More about us - Western Sussex is an acute trust with three hospitals; Worthing Hospital and St Richard’s in Chichester provide emergency, inpatient and outpatient care; and Southlands in Shoreham-by-Sea provides outpatient care and day surgery. Since April 2017, the senior leadership team has also managed neighbouring trust Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals.

Patient First - in 2015 the trust’s Patient First programme was launched to empower colleagues to make lasting changes that benefit patients and to ensure we continue to improve patient care with lean management best practice at every level of the trust. Improvement huddles are just one example of extensive and ongoing cultural change that makes Western Sussex an exciting place to work.

We have an exciting opportunity to appoint a new consultant colleague to work alongside our established collaborative Respiratory team as a Consultant Physician in Respiratory Medicine. This position is based at Worthing Hospital, part of the Western Sussex NHS Foundation Trust.

The appointee will join our engaging, innovative and forward thinking respiratory team who are working to expand our current provision of services. There are currently three consultant posts on each of the Worthing and Chichester sites. We have successfully recruited a fourth Consultant to the Chichester site (commencing January 2020) and are looking to expand our service further on the Worthing site (this post).

The department is increasingly developing sub-specialist services- these are currently Interstitial Lung Disease, Bronchiectasis, Sleep, Asthma, Cancer and pleural services and the new postholder would be encouraged to help with further development of these - we invite candidates to discuss this directly with our existing team with a view to opportunities for further service developments within their job plans. We envisage the new post holder to take a lead in one or two sub-speciality areas to progress service development; considering the applicants experience and interests.

The ongoing respiratory consultant expansion on both sites is also with a view to promoting enhanced ambulatory, domiciliary and in-reach care. We have also been successful in the local commissioning of home NIV services by NHS Sussex. It is also our aim to work towards 7 day specialist in-reach care. We run an outpatient based pleural service.

We work closely with our colleagues in Oncology and Radiology. We hold a weekly cancer MDT which is attended by our Oncologists and visiting Thoracic surgeon. We have a monthly ILD MDT.

We have an active audit programme and as a department have a focus on quality and safety.

We have funding for redevelopment of the respiratory ward and this is planned to encompass respiratory high dependency beds.

We have a well-developed (and recently appointed expansion to) specialist nursing team who support the team with subspecialty skill sets and nurse led clinics.

Western Sussex Hospitals is the first non-specialist acute trust in the country to be rated ‘Outstanding’ in all the key inspection areas assessed by the Care Quality Commission in 2019, improving upon the trust’s first ‘Outstanding’ rating from four years ago.

We are a forward looking and innovative trust whose purpose is to provide high quality emergency and elective care for the people of West Sussex. Foundation Trust Status was achieved in July 2013.

Our hospitals are all situated along the beautiful Sussex coast, nestled against the South Downs National Park, and close to vibrant towns that are richly endowed with excellent cultural and sporting facilities, offering good transport links to London and Europe.

All newly appointed Consultants are mentored, via the “WSHFT Mentorship scheme for senior medical staff”.
