Consultant Medical Examiner - 5 PA's

Ashford and St Peter’s Hosptials are seeking to recruit a Medical Examiner. In June 2018 the introduction of the Medical Examiner system was announced with a view to implementation in Acute Trusts from April 2019. The system will introduce a new level of scrutiny whereby all deaths will be subject to either a medical examiner’s scrutiny or a coroner’s investigation. The Medical Examiner Service, will comprise of Medical Examiners and Medical Examiner Officers (both clinical and non-clinical administrative support) who will combine clinical skills, compassion and sensitivity and a commitment to engage with bereaved families in order to complete a screen of every in-hospital death and identify cases for review using either a Structured Judgement Method or the undertaking of a Root Cause Analysis. The Medical Examiner(s) will be expected to screen and review deaths (from the preceding weekend or working day) to an agreed policy and time frame, liaise with the Coroner to develop a robust process for referrals, which minimises delays to bereaved families, and enables further investigations as appropriate.

We invite applications from Medical Consultants or GPs who have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and demonstrate a high level of tact and diplomacy due to the sensitive nature of the role. The role will require a strong ability to identify and address poor practice and work across boundaries in multi-disciplinary teams. You will be required to work in partnership with the Medical Examiner Officers, to develop the service from start-up and regularly review and refine this over time. We are looking to fill 5 sessions (PAs) Monday to Friday applicants may only wish to cover one or two of these. As this role is administrative, there will be no SPA time allocated to the role. This is an exciting opportunity to make a difference for both patients and their families/carers and staff within the Trust.
