Senior Children’s Community Carer

The Children Continuing Healthcare Team is a service under Children and Family Health Surrey; we provide high quality care for children aged between 0 and 19 years old with complex health needs, predominantly within their homes and also within nurseries, schools or out in the community. The children have a variety of health and communication needs, some of the children are nonverbal, using different communication aides and the majority of the children have tracheostomies and some with ventilation. You will be required to provide personal care, tracheostomy and ventilation care and other forms of support for the child.

We are a service that covers 24 hours a day care, seven days a week so our team works a rota pattern. As most of the children have care plans that provide support at night (22:00-07:00), the shifts are predominantly at night, although we do have some day shifts. The care we provide is considered life changing for the families and allows respite for parents/family.

This position requires you to have a minimum of 2 years’ experience working with children in a hospital/hospice/community setting. You will also need to have tracheostomy experience. For further essential/desirable criteria please click on the job description/job specification.

As the role is based in the community you will be required to have a full driving licence and access to a car as you will be travelling throughout Surrey.


• The induction training period depending on your band is between 3-6 months. Within this time you will complete all mandatory training which includes, the Care Certificate which is an industry recognised qualification, Clinical Skills training and shadowing.

• Full training is provided by our nursing team - our specially designed training room recreates a child’s bedroom and has all the equipment needed to teach our staff how to care for a child, including ventilators, suction machine, a cot and mannequins to enable demonstration and practical skills training in tracheostomy care.

• Children’s Continuing Care are keen to support and assist with the development of staff, therefore, we offer the opportunity to complete Level 2 in English and Maths. • We have opportunities to fund and support our staff to complete an apprenticeship degree in BSc (Hons) Nursing (Child).

• Opportunities for Registered Nurses to progress into roles in other services such as Specialist School Nursing and Children Community Nursing.
