Consultant Anaesthetist with Sub-Speciality Interest in Intensive Care Medicine

The Intensive Care Unit (Critical Care) is seeking to recruit an 8th Consultant Intensivist/ Anaesthetist with a Sub-speciality interest in ICM to join the existing team of 7 Consultant Intensivists, 24 Consultant Anaesthetists and 16 Associate Specialist/ Speciality Doctors.

The ICU is part of the Medical Care Clinical Business Unit and has recently received a “Good” rating in the Trust 2019 CQC assessment with an assessment of “Outstanding” for Caring.

The Unit is led by a Consultant Clinical Lead, Lead Nurse and Matron supported by the Clinical Director and Clinical Business Unit Managers.

Applications are invited for a Consultant Intensivist/ Anaesthetist with a Sub-speciality interest in ICM at Warrington & Halton Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The Post is based in Critical Care with sessions allocated in Anaesthetics as per agreed job plan. The post holder will be required to contribute to the ICU On-Call which requires 7-day working on a 1:8 basis. The department also works 08-20:00 weekdays on rotation.

The post is a full time appointment (10.0 PAs) with 8.5 PAs of Direct Clinical Care and 1.5 for Supporting Professional Activity.; in your first 6 months you will be afforded an additional 0.5 SPA to support new consultant development. Additional SPA can be negotiated for service and quality improvement roles.


The ICU is an 18 bedded combined critical care unit with 8 x Level 3 beds and 10 x Level 2 beds; the unit’s equipment has all recently been upgraded with state of the art monitoring and ventilation systems.

The post includes Critical Care Outreach supporting the Acute Care Team Nurses with unwell patients across the hospital.

The Trust has theatre complexes at three locations in Warrington hospital, Halton hospital and the trust dedicated Orthopaedic Centre at Cheshire Merseyside Treatment Centre on the Halton site. There is ample opportunity to work both flexibly and sub-specialise

Successful applicants must have full GMC registration and be on the specialty register or be within 6 months of receiving their CCT from date of interview.
