We have opportunities for Band 5 nurses on Jowers Ward, a female care of the elderly ward within the Medical Division at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton. We are an 11 bedded ward specialising in frailty and end of life care. We are one of the first wards to roll out Patient First Improvement System which helps empower staff to implement new changes within the ward area.

We are the base for the Small Acts of Friendship scheme which is running to improve the patient’s stay whilst in hospital. This includes hairdressing, massage, newspapers, volunteers and activities.

Applicants for this role will have a keen interest in caring for elderly patients, combined with an ability to provide care in a compassionate and dignified manner. The successful applicant will be numerate and literate, with excellent communication skills. The post holder needs to work well within a team and be able to work with a wide variety of staff to maintain standards in line with Trust and NMC guidelines.

You will be supported by the senior nursing team and professional development team. You will be given a local ward induction, a trust induction and access to a robust preceptorship programme aimed at supporting you to develop in the first few months of starting. There is also ongoing support through regular appraisals, competency based learning, and relevant study days. Continuing education and professional development are strongly encouraged and opportunities will be made available for the successful applicant as we work closely with our Higher Education partners to support nurses reach their full potential. The department actively engages a variety of Post-Registration courses.
