Band 7 Apprentice Advanced Clinical Practitioner (Radiotherapy)

Full time - 37.5 hrs/week

Department of Clinical Oncology, Cumberland Infirmary

We are seeking to recruit an experienced therapeutic radiographer ready to take the next step in their career to undertake a 3 year apprenticeship to become an Advanced Clinical Practitioner in radiotherapy. For this exciting new role the successful applicant will have broad experience and proficiency in all aspects of radiotherapy including pre-treatment and treatment delivery and demonstrable organisational and leadership skills. The postholder will be working within the team of clinical oncologists, therapeutic radiographers and clinical scientists to deliver high quality safe radiotherapy. During the apprenticeship the postholder will be supported through the academic component of their learning by UCLAN to achieve a MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice.

This is an exciting time to join the radiotherapy team in Carlisle. A new cancer centre is currently under construction due to open fully in November 2021 and the oncology service will be joining with the Northern Centre for Cancer Care in Newcastle. The postholder will therefore provide a key link between visiting oncologists from the Northern Centre for Cancer Care in Newcastle and the local service with the role focussing on supporting the medical staff with new referrals, consent, on treatment review and long term follow up enabling patients to stay close to home for their care.

The Department is ISO 9001:2015 accredited and is currently equipped with a Varian Truebeam and a Varian 2100CD Linear accelerator, Philips Brilliance Big Bore CT, Raystation TPS, Aria 13.7 patient management system, and a Therapax superficial unit.

The service routinely operates 8.45am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday with extended days used to accommodate monthly linac maintenance and QA.

We provide clinical oncology services for North, West and East Cumbria and parts of South West Scotland with approximately 900 referrals per year across all adult tumour sites. The department is sited at the Cumberland Infirmary on the western edge of the city.

The historic border city of Carlisle lies on the fringe of the beautiful Lake District National Park and the World Heritage site of Hadrian’s Wall. Carlisle has a diverse and affordable range of housing to choose from within the city or the surrounding towns and villages. There are excellent schools in the area with ‘Good’ and ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted ratings.
