Where are you heading?

Poole Hospital offers all you need to start or develop your career

Come and join us at Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Not only is it a great place to work; it's also a wonderful place to live. The town has great transport links, a bustling quay and some of the best beaches in England. You’ll also have easy access to the Dorset countryside, renowned for its areas of outstanding natural beauty and the spectacular Jurassic Coast, ideal for sports and outdoor activities.

Poole Hospital is one of the largest employers in the region and highly regarded across the NHS, consistently featuring within the top twenty per cent in both national patient and staff satisfaction surveys. We pride ourselves on positive team work, professional development and support staff to reach their fullest potential. All of this is underpinned by our unique philosophy, The Poole Approach, which pledges that we will strive at all times to provide friendly, professional, person-centred care with dignity and respect for all.

This is an exciting time for our staff, following a recent review of healthcare services in Dorset which will see major changes to the way healthcare is provided in our region. As one of the two acute NHS providers in the east of the county, our services will be closely linked to those provided at the Royal Bournemouth & Christchurch Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. We’re working in close collaboration to deliver excellent emergency and planned care over the two sites, for the people of east Dorset.

It is anticipated that the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust will merge in October 2020 to form University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust. It is a condition of employment that all staff being recruited in the period before merger will work across all sites pre and post-merger.

It’s been a busy time for Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust pharmacy department as we look forward to changes in care provision and service developments. We have recently completed a department refurbishment which has improved systems of working, facilitated by updating the dispensing robot and reviewing work flow; thus creating a pleasant working environment. The Chief Pharmacist and senior team are keen to drive forward clinical pharmacy services to hospital in-patients, supporting the wider activities of the Trust. We’ve embraced medicines optimisation, seven day working and electronic prescribing and administration of medicines. By continued service review, we have created new roles within the department, so now is a great time to join our team and help shape our services.

As a result of development, we have an exciting opportunity for a rotational band 6 Pharmacist. The role will involve providing clinical pharmacy services to the ward areas within rotation, such that experience is gained in all aspects of hospital pharmacy. A large part of the role is patient facing activities, such as completing medicines reconciliation, patient counselling and ensuring a safe supply of medicines; as well as gaining experience by supporting the Lead Pharmacists in the Directorate. Rotations cover a range of wards including medical, surgical, medicine for the elderly, paediatrics, oncology and haematology, as well as specialities such as homecare and the aseptic preparation unit.

Our staff are driven and motivated - we welcome applications from like-minded pharmacists with excellent clinical and communication skills who are keen to join our friendly team. The applicant must be efficient, organised, a good team worker but also able to act as an autonomous practitioner; they should be innovative and resourceful.

This position is ideal for a pharmacist wanting to support the daily clinical pharmacy provision and to gain experience in a variety of ward settings, as well as aseptic services. You will be supported by senior pharmacists and also expected to oversee the work of junior staff and technicians working alongside you. We are committed to working with our clinical and nursing colleagues to help deliver the best care for patients and we actively support new pharmacists in developing the skills needed to play a part in this multi-disciplinary team and interact with a variety of people on a one-to-one basis.

We are happy to consider applications from those with either hospital or other pharmacy backgrounds. We are fully committed to developing our staff and will offer the support needed to ensure our team members achieve their personal goals. We offer the opportunity to undertake a diploma in clinical pharmacy, supported by the education and training team and a personal mentor. Poole pharmacy strategy is committed to developing and supporting the role of pharmacists as independent prescribers.

To support seven day working, staff work Saturdays, Sundays, bank holidays & early evenings on a rotational basis. It is expected that band 6 pharmacists will participate in an out of hours on-call service.

Poole is a beautiful part of the country with easy access to award-winning sandy beaches and the Jurassic Coast. There are all the benefits of a large town within the Bournemouth and Poole conurbation, as well as good connections to other major towns and cities across the south, and with a direct train line to London. Poole offers almost unrivalled opportunities for an excellent work-life balance.
