About us

Salford Royal Hospital is the flagship hospital within the new Northern Care Alliance NHS group, uniting five hospitals to deliver excellent care across a large sector of Greater Manchester.

We are the only NHS organisation to receive an outstanding Care Quality Commission report on consecutive inspections and we are the second NHS Trust in the country and the first in the North of England to be rated outstanding.

We will soon become Europe’s largest major trauma centre and we currently have higher than expected major trauma outcome survival.

We are looking for a colleague to join a diverse group of 21 emergency medicine consultants (including 4 dual qualified paediatric emergency medicine consultants), 4 consultant paediatricians and 4 paediatric nurse consultants.

We are a friendly and mutually supportive team of consultants. We’ve developed a unique none-hierarchical approach to working with our nursing and practitioner colleagues and we have excellent relationships with allied specialities.

Within our number, we have two of the UK’s twelve emergency medicine professors; a vice-president of The Royal College of Emergency Medicine; the Trauma Audit and Research Network research lead; the regional Lead for major trauma and local leads for pre-hospital medicine. Many of us have portfolio careers, with interests inside and outside of medicine including critical care, sports medicine, ultrasound, research, farming, writing and music.

We have cutting-edge research and educational programmes with close links to local universities.

We have a strong sports emergency medicine interest, providing medical cover for local rugby, football and cycling teams.

The Job

We

  • provide 8am to midnight shop floor cover for a busy adult emergency department with 8-4, 10-6, 12-8, 2-10 and 6-midnight/on call shifts. There are dedicated paediatric emergency medicine shifts with flexibility for a PEM consultant. A separate well-remunerated optional 11pm to 9am trauma shift ensures 24 hour Trauma Team Leadership.
  • are a paediatric Major Trauma unit with a separate Paediatric Emergency Department.
  • provide cover for a minor injuries unit staffed largely by nurse practitioners.
  • have weekly clinical management team meetings and monthly consultant meetings.
  • provide robust support for developing career interests.
  • Do morning ward rounds on the adjacent emergency admissions unit.

Within Greater Manchester, Salford enjoys its own rich history. Our central location and excellent motorway network enjoys easy access to: The Lake District; The Yorkshire Dales and the seaside. Manchester city centre and airport are close by.
