Breast Clinicians form an integral part of the diagnostic team managing patients with benign and malignant breast disease. This post is part of a national pilot project developed by The Royal College of Radiologists and the Association of Breast Clinicians, and part funded by Health Education England. The aim of the project is to train breast clinicians to a national, standardised curriculum covering all the relevant aspects of clinical skills, risk analysis and radiology necessary to become an independent doctor working in breast screening and/or symptomatic practice. The training will follow a formalised three-year training path. Upon successful completion of the training, a certified credential will be awarded by the Royal College of Radiologists, equipping breast clinicians with the necessary skills to lead screening services, family history clinics and work in symptomatic clinics.

Specialist registrars in radiology are in full time training and it is required that you will join these trainees to complete the First FRCR physics examination. The first medical school in Essex is also due to open at Anglia Ruskin, approximately two miles from Broomfield hospital, in 2018. There will therefore be ample opportunity for contribution to both undergraduate/postgraduate education and research.

Southend, Broomfield and Basildon breast units are proud to provide a comprehensive breast service including breast screening, with approximately 160,000 women screened per year. Together the units treat between 850 -1000 new cancers annually. Dedicated one stop clinics run daily together with assessment, follow up, family history, breast pain and lymphoedema clinics. There are strong links with the Clinical Genetics Service run from Great Ormond Street and quarterly risk reducing multi-disciplinary meetings. We provide a full Oncoplastic surgery service within a designated day surgery units and host the National TIG Oncoplastic Fellow post. Complex plastic surgical reconstruction is provided by the regional St Andrew's Centre for Plastic Surgery and Burns at Broomfield Hospital. Symptomatic, screening, secondary cancer and oncoplastic MDTs are held across the two sites with a shared excellent oncology department together with an active research unit.

Applicants must be fully registered with the General Medical Council and be eligible to work in the UK. The minimum entry criteria include evidence of Foundation competences or equivalent within the last 3.5 years but we would welcome applicants with wider experience from other specialties or general practice. There is no commitment to general radiology or surgery and no on-call requirement.

This is a new post on a fixed term 3 year contract, based on full-time working.

Following successful completion of training there will be an opportunity for appointment to a Breast clinician post at the MSB.
