The Department of Clinical Chemistry at the Royal Cornwall Hospital (RCH) operates as a friendly and cohesive team providing a full range of diagnostic and clinical services to the acute and community sectors in Cornwall. The relative isolation and large population served by the department means that a larger and more complete range of services is offered than in many similarly sized units.

The department is due to be relocated to a refurbished laboratory, in partnership with the Haematology Department, as part of a new managed laboratory service via Abbott Diagnostics. In 2018-19 the department processes around 500,000 specimens and 7 million tests annually and serves a population of 410,000 people. A recent new managed laboratory service will see a combined blood sciences department equipped with new automation and IT. Pathology in Truro is part of the South 1 NHSI Pathology Network and works closely and collaboratively the other 4 Pathology services across this area.

The post is offered full time as 10 PAs, with an additional PA available by agreement with the Trust.

Applicants are required to hold FRCPath or equivalent, be on the GMC Specialist Register (CCT in Chemical Pathology and Metabolic Medicine) or within 6 months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT at the time of interview.
