It is an exciting time to be joining the newly formed Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust which has resulted from the merger of The Luton and Dunstable University Hospital and Bedford Hospital NHS Trusts. The merger took place on 1 April 2020 and under the umbrella of the single NHS Trust both hospitals will retain their identity and individual hospital names. This will bring many benefits for patients and opportunities for staff. Both hospitals will retain their identity with individual hospital names and key services will remain on both sites and be managed as single teams across the whole Bedfordshire catchment area. Travel between hospital sites may be required.

Through tremendous commitment and hard work, our Paediatrics, Emergency Care Services and Outpatient Services achieved “Outstanding” in our 2016 Care Quality Commission inspection. Similarly we had an overall rating of “Good” across the rest of the hospital. We were praised as compassionate, empathetic and exhibiting patient outcomes above the average when compared with other acute Trusts.

We are a regional centre of excellence for several key specialties including, Obesity Research, Neurophysiology, Cardiology, Ophthalmology and Cancer Services. We are a tertiary level NICU provider and one of the largest centres for breast screening in the country.

Applications are invited for the above full-time or part-time post to join our team of consultant staff at this 700 bed acute hospital serving a local population of approximately 400,000. The appointment will be made in accordance with the terms and conditions of service for the 2003 consultant contract (England).

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to help further develop and strengthen our clinical and laboratory haematology service. The post holder will work with a motivated team of colleagues across the whole range of laboratory and clinical haematology, in outpatient and inpatient settings.

The appointee will be part of a team of five consultants, three middle grade doctors and rotating junior staff providing a comprehensive haematology service, and will work with a team of specialist nurses in anticoagulation, chemotherapy, transfusion, and haemoglobinopathy. This is a general haematology post; however the development of a special interest would be welcomed.

The post-holder should have expertise and experience in all aspects of haematology and will be actively involved in haemato-oncology and general haematology service provision with an on-call commitment.

The Trust has a Level 2a Haemato-Oncology Unit for inpatient and outpatient management of patients in a dedicated, specialist setting. This is supported by a modern Macmillan chemotherapy suite and a Medical Day ward. The hospital forms part of the Mount Vernon Cancer Network and the haemato-oncology service is closely linked with Mount Vernon Cancer Centre. A strong tertiary referral link is maintained with UCLH and the Royal Free Hospital.

The Haematology laboratory has UKAS accreditation and MHRA blood bank compliance. The varied laboratory workload includes the full range of investigations to support the clinical services of a large DGH.

The Trust received an overall ‘Good’ for services at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital following its CQC inspection, and was recently announced the only hospital in the country to meet all of the key targets.

The Hospital has always been renowned for its friendly atmosphere and good working relationships. The Trust has University Hospital status with UCL and the Royal Free, which provides an opportunity to strengthen our teaching and R&D programme and brings a more academic environment to the hospital. This department is fully committed to teaching and training both undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.

The Hospital has easy access to central London and the rural Chilterns. The rural areas include many attractive villages and towns within easy reach of the Hospital including St Albans and Harpenden. Excellent schools are found nearby. There is also very good access to the Midlands and London by road using the M1 or A1, or by rail to one of Luton’s three stations. A direct link using the new ‘Busway’ takes passengers from Luton Train station just 7 minutes to reach a stop within a short walking distance of the hospital. London Luton Airport is within fifteen minutes’ drive from the hospital.

Applicants must be fully registered on the UK General Medical Council’s Specialist Register and have MRCP and FRCPath.

Residence is required within ten miles by road or thirty minutes travelling time of the Hospital.
