Paediatric Plastic Surgery Fellowship with interest in Ear Reconstruction, Vascular Anomalies and Facial Reanimation

12 month fixed term

We warmly invite International applications for this one year Paediatric Plastic Surgery Fellowship with Ear Reconstruction, Vascular Anomalies and Facial Reanimation at Birmingham Women’s and Children's Hospital. This post is suitable for senior trainees who are either post CCT or wishing to gain experience in Paediatric Plastic Surgery and looking to broaden their experience in these specialist areas. The Fellowship will be supervised by Mr Mark Lloyd who is the Head of Speciality of the Department of Plastic Surgery and specialises in ear reconstruction, reconstruction for craniofacial microsomia and vascular anomalies. The Fellowship will also allow the trainee to learn the techniques of facial reanimation and corneal neurotisation being pioneered at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Please be aware, there is a separate Craniofacial Fellowship, Cleft Fellowship and Congenital Hand Fellowship offered at Birmingham Children’s Hospital and the candidate will have exposure to these other services when time allows but is expected to be training in the areas stated in the above job description.

The Fellow will be job planned and will be expected to do a 1 in 8 Plastic Surgery on-call with support from nurse practitioners and junior doctors from the Hospital at Night team. The on-call will include taking referrals for hand, face and burn injuries. The Fellow will also be expected to participate in one Hand Trauma Clinic per week and one Trauma List per week with the usual paediatric trauma such as fingertip injuries, forehead and lip lacerations, with minimal supervision. The Fellow will be expected take an active role in teaching and in the social life of the unit. The Fellow will receive coaching and support in their application for a Consultant Post either in the UK or abroad and the expectation is that the candidate will graduate into a Consultant Post following this post. The Fellow will participate and teach in two FRCS(Plast) courses run by Mr Lloyd and there will be an informal graduation prior to the Fellow leaving. The Fellow will gain at least two publications with Mr Lloyd’s supervision and be encouraged to present their work at academic meetings. The candidate will be shown how to achieve prizes for their work.
