Funded by NHS England, The Office for Life Sciences and NHS Improvement, the West of England Academic Health Science Network exists to accelerate the spread of innovative, evidence-based practice to improve health and care in the West of England. We work with all six acute Trusts, five Clinical Commissioning Groups, five community providers, two mental health Trusts and three universities in the West of England. We also work closely with local businesses, small and medium enterprises, Local Enterprise Partnerships and a range of other academic partners to facilitate the adoption and spread of innovation into health and social care.

We are committed to improving outcomes for patients through improving access to research, applying evidence and ensuring consistency of clinical practice. We run projects working at scale to spread evidence-based quality improvements across the region.

Our highly collaborative network accelerates the scale and pace of delivering consistent good practice across our communities. This work is underpinned by high levels of collaboration with industry to ensure that we are innovative, enhance patient outcomes and drive up wealth in our local economy.

We host the Patient Safety Collaborative for the West of England and manage a wide improvement agenda working across all health care sectors. Our aim is to reduce incidents of harm and improve quality. We are committed to supporting and building the quality improvement capability and capacity of our local organisations.

This is an exciting opportunity for a creative communications professional with both traditional and digital communication skills and experience in stakeholder engagement to join our small, dynamic team and help build our national profile.

You’ll be joining the AHSN Network at an important time as we embark on a number of new programmes, so there will plenty of opportunities to make your mark.

There are 15 Academic Health Science Networks (AHSNs) across England, established by NHS England in 2013 to spread innovation at pace and scale. Each AHSN works across a distinct geography serving a different population in each region.

As the only bodies that connect NHS and academic organisations, the third sector and industry, AHSNs are catalysts that create the right conditions to facilitate change across whole health and social care economies, with a clear focus on improving outcomes for citizens. Find out more at

As the AHSNs have moved into the second year of their new licence, their transformational national and local impacts – and the potential to amplify this even further – are evident, focusing on improving patient outcomes, achieving efficiencies for the NHS and leveraging investment to support economic growth.

Looking ahead, the AHSNs are continuing to develop their roles as a key delivery arm of the Accelerated Access Collaborative, and from April 2020 will be launching a new set of national programmes for rapid spread across England.

It is essential for the AHSN Network to ensure national stakeholders are engaged in, and are aware of our outstanding contributions to healthcare innovation and transformation: 15 organisations working together to make a game-changing contribution to national innovation spread in ways never achieved before by the NHS.

This is why we are seeking an enthusiastic communications and engagement professional who can work across the 15 AHSNs to seek out and present great AHSN Network and local AHSN content on a national stage.

This role will support the Network to maximise our full engagement potential, building awareness of the AHSNs’ profile and collective impact, focusing both on internal communications across the AHSNs, and external engagement with national stakeholder individuals and organisations.

The post holder will be passionate about the NHS and a great storyteller able to present information in a compelling way via a range of channels (social media, web and digital, slide decks, reports and marketing collateral).

The post holder will coordinate across individual AHSNs and national programmes to identify and gather our very best stories and statistics, and will support the AHSN Network Central Coordination Office to use existing / develop new creative channels and opportunities to communicate these to our stakeholder individuals and organisations.

In addition to generating and communicating content, the role will support the development of systems and processes to manage effective engagement, such as maintaining contact lists and tracking ongoing engagements / developing a Customer Relationship Management system.

The post holder will work as part of the ‘virtual’ Central Coordinating Office, reporting to the Communications Manager, Assistant Coordination Director and Coordination Director, in close liaison with the AHSN Network Chair and Vice Chair, Chief Officer Communications Leads, Co-Chairs of the AHSN Communications Forum and individual AHSN communications teams.

This role will initially be offered as a one year fixed term, full time basis, hosted within the West of England AHSN based in Bristol (with a strong requirement for flexible / homeworking). It will also require occasional national travel.
