It is an exciting time to be joining the newly formed Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust which has resulted from the merger of The Luton and Dunstable University Hospital and Bedford Hospital NHS Trusts. The merger took place on 1 April 2020 and under the umbrella of the single NHS Trust both hospitals will retain their identity and individual hospital names. This will bring many benefits for patients and opportunities for staff. Both hospitals will retain their identity with individual hospital names and key services will remain on both sites and be managed as single teams across the whole Bedfordshire catchment area. Travel between hospital sites may be required.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Health care Professional to join and lead the Emergency Department Team at Bedford Hospital.

This is a pivotal role and as the ED Manager/Matron you will have responsibility to ensure that our patients receive high quality and compassionate care whilst in ED.

Effective communication, a strong collaborative approach and ability to engage the nursing workforce and multidisciplinary team within an ever changing, ever challenging environment is essential.

This post holder will have extensive knowledge of the operational running of an Emergency Department and must be clinically credible.

Key objectives will include implementation of the national and local nursing strategies and achievement of key performance indicators in relation to quality of care and patient experience. You will have strong leadership skills, be an enthusiastic and motivated leader who is able to make a positive difference to your patients experience and to the teams you manage. The ability to quickly build strong working relationships with the team will be essential to take our demanding agenda forward.



  1. The post holder will be the key clinical leader ensuring the highest standards of nursing practice and clinical care is delivered to our patients.

  2. The post holder will work with closely with the Site Team to ensure that patient flow is maximised.

  3. The post holder will provide professional leadership and management to all accountable staff including recruitment, appraisal, continual professional development and disciplinary matters in order to provide a patient focused service.

  4. Accountable for service delivery, including clinical standards, management of clinical risk and complaints – liaising with other agencies as appropriate and playing a pro-active role in quality improvement.

  5. Responsible for departmental budgets and effective management of resources.

  6. Responsible for service development relating to ED workforce in accordance to national recommendations and standards.

  7. Responsible for driving the ethos behind the NHS Matron’s Charter in relation to providing a clean environment for patients and thereby reducing the risk of cross infection

  8. The post holder will work as part of the Emergency Services within the hospital and will cover other areas as necessary and as directed by the Head Nurse

The hospital has grown significantly especially within the last 30 years. It now provides a wide range of services which include beds for Care of the Elderly, ENT, General Medicine, General Surgery, Gynaecology, Neonatal, Obstetrics, Oncology, Trauma and Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, Vascular Surgery, Breast Surgery and Urology. A modern Accident and Emergency Department includes a 6-bedded observation ward. The Critical Care Complex provides both High Dependency and Intensive Care beds to a maximum capacity of 12 beds.
