Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust manages Leighton Hospital in Crewe, Victoria Infirmary in Northwich and Elmhurst Intermediate Care Centre in Winsford. Our clinical facilities are excellent, as we have invested in state of the art theatres, Critical Care, Emergency Department and our Childrens Wards (to name but a few). Following an NHSI initiative to establish 29 Pathology networks across England the University Hospital of North Midlands is currently working closely with Mid and East Cheshire NHS Trusts to establish a Pathology network across Staffordshire and Cheshire.


A post for a 2 year fixed term, part time Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) is available in the Haematology Department based at Leighton Hospital. The 9.5 hours are as follows:

Mon 16:00-18:30

Wed 16:00-18:30

Thurs 16:15-18:30

Fri 16:15-18:30

The MLA’s role is to support the busy Biomedical Scientists within the Haematology Department. Responsibilities include checking off samples, the routine maintenance of analysers within the department and processing of referred assays.

Data inputting skills and attention to detail are essential as a large proportion of the work involves typing patient information into the computer system.

The successful applicant will be enthusiastic, well-motivated, possess excellent organisational and interpersonal skills and be committed to the provision of a high quality laboratory service. Full training will be given for this post.

The Haematology Laboratory is equipped with three Beckman Coulter DxH 800 FBC analysers, two Werfen ACL Top 550 coagulation analysers and Starrsed Auto Compact ESR analyser. Blood Transfusion is equipped with one Bio-Rad IH-1000 and one Bio-Rad IH-500 blood group analyser. LIMS is provided by LabCentre, CliniSys system. The laboratory is ISO 15189 accredited and approved as a training laboratory for both HCPC Registration and Specialist portfolios and IBMS Biomedical Support workers portfolios.

Continuous professional development is actively encouraged and attendance at appropriate internal and external courses is supported.
