University Hospitals Southampton (UHS) Critical Care Units are renowned for our local and national contribution to Critical Care and for consistently delivering high standards of clinical care. We are very proud of our developments and our service has expanded enabling us to actively recruit.

UHS is one of only two places in the south of England to offer adults and children full onsite major trauma care provision.

Critical Care at UHS is the largest on the South coast comprising of a 25 bedded General ICU, 14 bedded Neurosurgical ICU, a 15 bedded Cardiac ICU and a 10 bedded Surgical High Dependency. UHS is a designated major trauma centre and has general and specialist critical care areas which were awarded ‘outstanding’ for leadership in our recent CQC inspection in which the Trust overall rating was ‘Good’.

The General Intensive care unit (GICU) is currently a 25 bedded facility with plans for a brand new expanded unit to be built over the next 2 years. This will provide a 32 bed unit caring for patients with diverse and complex needs following a variety of injuries. Caring for predominantly unplanned admissions as well as some elective cases GICU was recently awarded exemplar status by our Trust accreditation scheme.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic, highly motivated and caring senior sister / charge nurse with proven specialist Critical Care knowledge and skills to join our forward-thinking Critical Care Senior Team at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. If you are a confident, well-organised, strong and visible nurse leader, who thrives in a busy and diverse clinical environment then we would like to hear from you.

As a Senior Sister/Charge Nurse within the General Intensive Care you will be expected to promote the delivery of a high standard of patient-centred care. With the support of the Matron you will analyse, monitor and implement actions that ensure the service delivery is safe and effective in line with the Trust values. You will be responsible for the daily operational management and service delivery process within the department, along with the line management and development of the nursing team. You will ensure the smooth running of the unit, working as a key decision maker alongside the multi professional team, leading on aspects of clinical care and focusing on patient safety, experience and quality assurance frameworks.

The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills. They will be educated to a degree level with evidence of on-going education. They must be able to demonstrate a compassionate approach to the care of patients and the public, whilst also possessing the ability to ensure robust clinical operational demands are met. The unit offers the opportunity to actively participate in Critical Care issues at Trust, National and at an International level. The varied and complex case mix plus a commitment to role development in a visionary manner makes this an excellent opportunity.

Should you be looking for ongoing career opportunities, enjoy working in a stimulating supportive environment with staff that are ‘Proud and Professional as well as having access to the beautiful Hampshire/Dorset coastline and the diversity of the acclaimed New Forest; Southampton is the place to be.
