Where are you heading?

Poole Hospital offers all you need to start or develop your career

Come and join us at Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Not only is it a great place to work; it's also a wonderful place to live. The town has great transport links, a bustling quay and some of the best beaches in England. You’ll also have easy access to the Dorset countryside, renowned for its areas of outstanding natural beauty and the spectacular Jurassic Coast, ideal for sports and outdoor activities.

Poole Hospital is one of the largest employers in the region and highly regarded across the NHS, consistently featuring within the top twenty per cent in both national patient and staff satisfaction surveys. We pride ourselves on positive team work, professional development and support staff to reach their fullest potential. All of this is underpinned by our unique philosophy, The Poole Approach, which pledges that we will strive at all times to provide friendly, professional, person-centred care with dignity and respect for all.

This is an exciting time for our staff, following a recent review of healthcare services in Dorset which will see major changes to the way healthcare is provided in our region. As one of the two acute NHS providers in the east of the county, our services will be closely linked to those provided at the Royal Bournemouth & Christchurch Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. We’re working in close collaboration to deliver excellent emergency and planned care over the two sites, for the people of east Dorset.

It is anticipated that the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust will merge in the summer of 2020 to form East Dorset Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. It is a condition of employment that all staff being recruited in the period before merger will work across all sites pre and post-merger.

We would like to recruit appropriately skilled midwives for full and part time hours to join the Poole midwifery team and have vacancies in the following teams:

  • Rotational post through the maternity service

We offer SKYPE interviews for shortlisted candidates from the UK and abroad.

Some great things are happening across Poole Maternity Service; in 2016; we not only achieved Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) full Accreditation but were also rated ‘good’ for maternity in our CQC inspection. In 2017, we will be early adopter for the recommendations of the National Maternity Review ‘Better Births’, and in conjunction with the Academic Health Science Network, we are implementing NHS England’s care bundle ‘Saving Babies Lives’.

Maternity Services at Poole are located in the community and on a self-contained site at the St Mary’s Maternity Hospital, located across the road from the main Poole Hospital site. The Maternity Hospital is the centre for all high risk care in east Dorset and is fully equipped to meet the needs of women and babies with complications, as well as women with normal pregnancies and births. The Maternity Service provides a comprehensive service, offering women as much choice as possible in their maternity care; around 5,000 babies are delivered by our maternity staff each year, either at home or within the birth centre and labour ward in the hospital. The Maternity Service offers a traditional model of midwifery care with separate teams for the acute and community service.

The Midwifery Led Haven Birth Centre has a total of five birthing rooms, three of these have pools to facilitate water birth and we offer an aromatherapy service. Care on the Birth Centre is managed completely by midwives and incorporates natural birthing techniques and is fully equipped to support normal birth in a home-from-home environment.

The Labour Ward provides care for women with high risk pregnancies and is currently undergoing some refurbishment. Already refurbished, there are two dedicated obstetric theatres, a two bedded high dependency unit and two birth rooms with pools and telemetry monitoring in order to offer water birth to women with medium risk pregnancies. Midwives on the Labour Ward develop their skills as a part of a cohesive multidisciplinary team.

We have a 12 bedded antenatal ward with a 32 bedded postnatal ward which incorporates transitional care.

The Maternity department is committed to education and development, and invests in an education team which supports learning and practice development across the department. Opportunities currently in place are as follows:

  • Access to a Practice Development Midwife and Clinical Practice Facilitator
  • Live Team Skills Drills
  • Access recognised post-registration qualifications in partnership with Bournemouth University
  • E-learning programmes
  • Post registration opportunities to study at degree, Masters and PhD level
  • Potential to progress through the career structure from Midwife Practitioner to Midwife Team Leader, Consultant Midwife and Matron.

As a band 6 midwife it is expected that you will be clinically competent and will take responsibility as a sign off mentor for student midwives. You will work a shift pattern that includes unsocial hours. We can offer you the opportunity to take on link roles within infection control / risk management / clinical skills trainer/ safeguarding as required by the service.

Please note: if this job requires you to have a DBS check to enable you to properly fulfil the requirements of the job, on appointment you will be required to repay the cost of obtaining a DBS check and this amount will be reclaimed from your salary.
