We are looking for an experienced, highly motivated Trauma nurse specialist with excellent communication and organisational skills. Your leadership and clinical skills will be key in ensuring seamless outstanding care for our orthopaedic trauma patients. Being a visible presence on the wards you will provide teaching and advice to staff, patients and their carer’s. This is a 12 month fixed term contract working 30 hours per week.


The trauma & orthopaedic (T&O) specialist nurse team provide a 7 day a week trauma service co-ordinating the review, treatment, theatre planning and follow-up of patients who have experienced orthopaedic trauma. Working independently and as part of the wider MDT you will be involved in the provision of care to the trauma patients.

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) is a major trauma centre (established 2012), the trauma specialist nurses work closely with both the major trauma team and the tho-plastic surgery team as part of the MDT. We treat patients from across Hampshire, and provide second opinions and treatment for complex conditions for patients from a wider area.


  • To work as an autonomous specialist nurse under the supervision of the senior specialist nurse practitioner (SNP) and the trauma consultant leads.
  • This role involves undertaking competency based patient assessment and examination in order to formulate a management plan for specific groups of patients admitted to UHS for diagnosis and / or treatments.
  • The SNP is expected to undertake all preparatory work prior to the patient undergoing treatment or diagnosis which may include consent, if appropriate, request of any further investigations and to highlight any potential complications to the senior nurse practitioner or relevant doctor.


Experience in nursing trauma patients is essential to the role, however additional support and training will be provided if required. Working as part of a collaborative team you will be supported to adapt and grow as an autonomous nurse under the supervision of the senior trauma nurse specialist and the trauma consultant leads.
