Barking Havering and Redbridge University NHS Trusts (BHRUT) is one of the most forward thinking Maternity units in London, serving a diverse population across a large geographical area. Midwives working in the unit gain significant skills in caring for high risk women as well as being autonomous practitioners for midwifery led care. This has led to the Trust being nationally recognised with our quality improvement surrounding CTG training for staff. BHRUT are proud to have recently been nominated and awarded runner up for Midwifery service of the year and mentor of the year.

We have a unique partnership with the Virginia Mason Institute (VMI) and and are working with our staff to embed their principles and guidance in ‘The PRIDE Way’ of improvement and culture at BHRUT. The Virginia Mason programme helps us all to review what we do, how we do it, when we do it, why we do it, and let’s not forget who we do it to. This programme enables us to transform the way we think and work from managing an antenatal clinic to attending meetings; exciting times are ahead.

We have a dedicated maternity high dependency unit and a co-located midwifery led birth centre that has a 40% water birth rate. There is also a wide range of specialist services including a proactive public health midwife team, fetal medicine unit, bereavement team and a dynamic midwifery education team that strongly supports professional development.

As we continue on our journey to be one of the best maternity units in the country we have implemented a paperlite electronic intra partum maternity IT system, phase one of our strategy towards a paperless maternity system.

Our philosophy is to provide evidence based care to women who are both high and low risk to ensure they receive the best patient experience throughout their journey through the maternity service. Our current user satisfaction feedback shows that over 94% of women would recommend the services to their family or friends.

We are looking to recruit midwives with considerable experience, ideally in a variety of maternity settings to join our Trust Temps Bank. There are opportunities to be gained by being part of our bank team of midwives where you will enjoy the support of core staff and your midwifery skills will remain current and up to date.
