This is an exciting opportunity to join our enthusiastic, dynamic and well-motivated Cardiac team at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. This is a new post and is required due to expansion of the North West Congenital Heart Disease service to include the provision of Adult Congenital Heart Disease surgery at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital.

The post holder will have commitments to both paediatric and adult surgical patients at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. Alder Hey Children’s Hospital is internationally renowned and   provides   a high-volume of paediatric congenital   cardiac surgery.  The Surgical Department is organised with a fully shared waiting list for all ages and complexity on both sites so to avoid occasional practice and to minimise surgical waiting times.

The team have taken a measured and systematic approach to developing and strengthening the surgical capability over recent years. This has allowed them to build up the capacity to perform high quality surgery with excellent outcomes, becoming one of the largest units in the country.

The strategic commitment is to continue with that programme and the Alder Hey unit aims to treat approximately 500 paediatric surgical cases each year, with approximately 300-350 of them requiring cardiopulmonary bypass. An additional caseload of over 100 ACHD surgical cases is envisaged to develop at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital.

Alder Hey is part of the North-West Consortium for training (Liverpool, Manchester and Blackpool) and attracts numbered trainees on a rotational basis. The candidate will be expected to participate in all training related activities.

The candidate will have the opportunity and be expected to participate in both retrospective and prospective studies in addition to contributing intellectually to all research activities.  The department has a robust research program directed towards national and international meetings as well as peer-received medical journals. 

It is a requirement for successful candidates to have completed Specialist Training and to be entered on the GMC Specialist Register or be eligible to be listed within six months of interview
