We are looking for a highly skilled and enthusiastic individual who is looking for a challenging and rewarding role with the opportunity to shape and develop this new service.

We currently have a Lead Nurse/Deputy Hospital Manager post at The Avalon Centre our new 20 bed Neurobehavioural Rehabilitation Service in Swindon.

Salary: Dependent upon experience (£45,000-£50,000)


Provide operational leadership in the delivery of highest quality Nursing Services

To ensure systems are designed, implemented and monitored to ensure both efficient financial and clinical performance in the nursing department

To advise, support and educate nurses in their areas of service delivery

To set standards for the nursing services, reflecting and positively promoting the business of the hospital.

To maintain high profile leadership in areas of clinical governance as they impact on service deliveryNeed to Do

To contribute to the Development of policies and procedures

Liaison with internal & external professionals

Nursing Department Service Level Agreements

Clinical Governance as it impacts on service delivery.

Continuous Professional Development for nurses.

Key Outputs

Strategic Responsibility in conjunction with Hospital Director and SMT

Liaison with Regional Director of Nursing re strategic planning of service developments in context of Neurological Services.

Monitoring performance of site Senior Nurses.

Development and delivery of Nursing Service Level agreements against key performance indicators

Development of coordinated nursing services that are responsive to the needs of patients, carers and all stakeholders in line with Service Agreements

Nursing Workforce forecasting and planning

Development and delivery of clinical and corporate governance targets within the Nursing Services

Contributing to Neurological Services strategic planning and advising the Hospital Director on nursing issues.

Quality and Clinical Governance

Development of internal/external customer service initiatives

Achievement and retention of external, professional and educational networks

Development and maintenance of hospital operational reporting statistics for both internal and external analysis of the nursing department

Monitoring the impact of the Quality Improvement Strategy on the hospital’s business plan

Actively contribute to the development and implementation of Elysium Healthcare quality initiatives

Actively support the implementation of the Clinical Audit Programme

Actively support and monitor CPD for all nursing staff


Legislation/Policies and Procedures

Ensure the nursing department complies with the requirements of the National Care Standards Act 2000 at all times

Ensure that nursing services meet the requirements of the Mental Health Act and to act as a source of advice to other departments

Monitoring nursing services policies and procedures, ensuring adherence with the Health, Safety and Welfare at Work Act 1974

Contribute effectively to the lead nurse forum of diversity in Service Provision


Human Resources

Assist in the development of effective recruitment and retention strategies to meet the hospitals staffing needs and to minimise turnover

Lead in the Nurse Education and Professional Development Strategy, through links with local Universities and in line with the Continuing Professional Development Strategy



Monitor and control delegated budgets

Positively promote the organisation through involvement in external professional groups

Keep abreast of current DoH/NHS Guidance for provision of services


Operation Responsibilities – Clinical

To actively promote transdisciplinary working.

Participate in the on call arrangement

Provide the Hospital Director with relevant, accurate and timely information required for effective decision making

Leadership of Nursing Services ensuring highest possible professional standards

Management of resources within budget allocation

Supervision of senior nurses

Contributing to the Development and maintenance of a culture of continuous professional development


Operational Responsibilities – Business

Direct involvement in the pre-admission assessment process

Direct customer and contract liaison in conjunction with the unit manager

Deputising for the Hospital Director

Active participation in on-call arrangements

To comply with individual responsibilities of relevant legislation

Key Performance Indicators

Compliance with relevant standards within National Care Standards Act Qualifications


Post Graduate qualification at degree level relevant to healthcare

Management qualification (DMS or equivalent preferred)


Registered Nurse RMN/RMNH/RNLD

Experience within a neurological setting

5 years post qualification experience

Budgetary and financial management

Operational management experience at senior level
