BAND 6 OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST - ORTHOPAEDICS

Trauma and Elective

Part-time - 22.5 hours per week

This post offers the opportunity to work within our progressive, forward-thinking team. We are one of only a few Trusts to have removed post-operation hip precautions and have recently been involved in an exciting NHS-i project looking at further improving our hip fracture pathway.

This post is within the integrated Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy Department of James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The department has been fully integrated since 2005, with specialist teams of occupational therapists, physiotherapists and therapy assistant practitioners working alongside each other and being managed together. This enables a more co-ordinated approach to patients’ therapy and rehabilitation.

The integrated Orthopaedic Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy Team work closely with the ward MDT including nurses, case managers, ortho-geriatricians and hip fracture keyworkers, to provide excellent holistic assessment and rehabilitation for our trauma patients. We also have excellent working relationships with our consultants and there is opportunity to develop and improve existing services and pathways through collaborative working.

There are clear national guidelines and pathways including hip fractures, spinal cord injury and multi-trauma which highlight the importance of the occupational therapy role in providing quality care and the promotion of independence. There is a key role for occupational therapists within the elective pathways including supporting our therapy assistant practitioners and being involved with developing our Paget Enhanced Recovery Pathway (PERP) to include a frail elderly elective pathway.

You will gain experience working with complex trauma patients including spinal cord injury, multi-pathology, palliative needs, dementia and other cognitive impairments.

There may also be the potential in the future for rotational opportunities and experience as services develop within the Trust and with our Community Partners.

Working in this integrated department also offers the opportunity to:

  • Consolidate and develop specialist clinical skills
  • Develop audit and service development skills
  • Focus on multidisciplinary working and learning including contributing to an in-service training rota
  • Develop supervisory skills with junior staff, therapy assistant practitioners and students
