We are looking for a senior sister/charge nurse to join our specialist trauma, orthopaedic and spinal surgery paediatric ward (G3) at Southampton Children’s Hospital on a 12 month secondment/ fixed term contract. G3 is a 20 bedded unit catering for those who require orthopaedic surgery and rehabilitation; including specialist spinal surgery, and major trauma patients. The ward has 2 high dependency beds to support children undergoing spinal surgery and cares for babies, children and young people up to the age of 18. It also supports a number of medical patients, particularly over busy winter months, giving staff a wide experience and breadth of skills.


Working with the child health matron you’ll be responsible for:

  • providing professional nursing leadership to the team
  • enhancing nursing practice and strategy
  • providing assurance that high quality care is delivered to patients
  • ensuring that Trust requirements for monitoring and compliance are met


We’d love to hear from children’s nurses with experience of working in a leadership capacity, who can evidence ongoing education and qualifications appropriate to this speciality. You must be able to demonstrate a compassionate approach to patient care and the public, as well as the ability to meet robust clinical operational demands.

As well as the relevant NMC registration and evidence of proven clinical ability in paediatric nursing, we’re looking for:

  • the ability to manage complex teams
  • the ability to prioritise and deliver against agreed objectives
  • excellent communication and leadership skills within a multidisciplinary team
  • high level problem solving, organisational skills and a positive approach to challenges
