Pre-assessment Sister

Job Reference: 188-NM2056

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust
Specialist medicine
Southampton General Hospital, Southampton
£30,401 - £37,267 per annum

A new and exciting opportunity has become available in Managed care. We are searching for a Band 6 Pre-assessment nurse to run a new service development initiative: Pre-assessment of patients having an elective endoscopic procedure.

Managed care prides itself in creating a nurse led, innovative, effective service that is devoted to both our patients and staff. Managed care is based in Victoria house infusion unit but we also have five beds on the surgical day unit.

The unit is currently open from 07.30 – 20.00 Monday to Friday. We roster staff on an early shift 07:30 – 15:30 or a late 12:00 – 20:00pm. We are closed weekends and bank holidays currently but this may potentially become a six or seven day service in the future.

We have been pre-assessing patients having an ERCP, TACE or biopsy for several years now but we are now branching out to include pre-assessments for patients having endoscopic procedures.

Managed care is now recognised for its efforts in admission avoidance. We are passionate about developing and redesigning our services to meet the growing demands of our patients with chronic illnesses. We have recently won Team of the month for teaching a patient with Chronic disease how to give her treatment at home. We have won various awards including for leadership, mentorship and service improvement through the years, and remain committed to patient care, safety and experience.

We are looking for a band 6 to continue developing the role of a telephone pre-assessment for patients having a surveillance colonoscopy and support patient pathways relating to endoscopic procedures.

The pre-assessment will involve:

Organising and prioritising care in conjunction with the multi- disciplinary team, delivering a high level of care and an informative service to patients

Screening the referral to check that the surveillance interval meets national guidelines and that there has not been any significant changes to the patient’s medical history since the patient was referred, which would now render them as unsuitable for surveillance.

To facilitate effective communication between all members of the multidisciplinary team and associate departments, possess excellent skills in providing the often sensitive and highly emotive information given to patients and relatives.

As deputy to the senior sister you will be instrumental in ensuring the application of effective clinical practice of all staff so patients receive the highest possible standard of care.

An experienced nurse to practice advanced nursing skills e.g. history taking, physical assessment, diagnostic reasoning, venepuncture and cannulation, ECG’s, order and understand investigative tests, utilise patient group directives as indicated.

Extensive experience to include considerable experience at band 5 within an acute trust either within a surgical or medical setting.

Evidence of clinical leadership and managerial responsibility.

Excellent interpersonal skills.
