Time commitment

  • Up to 4 hours a week when courses are running (2-4 hours per month when courses are not running)




The objectives are

  • To improve patient experience when attending the Empower Programme

  • To support other volunteers in the delivery of the Empower programme

  • To provide valuable admin experience for volunteers


Empower is a 6 week self-management programme for people with a long-term health condition. This course, developed by Stanford University, is an educational, empowering programme for members of the community to attend and learn what their role is in managing their health condition in order to better understand how to take control of their physical and mental health. This course is uniquely delivered only by volunteers who have a long-term condition themselves, who continue to teach the community how to better manage their condition based on national research.


We are looking for further volunteers to help with the running of the programme and ensure that our participants have the best experience possible. This unique opportunity is open to applicants who have an understanding of long-term conditions, has a long term condition or cares for someone who does.




The volunteer will help with

  • Setting up the programme materials before a course

  • Meet and greet attendees

  • Give out materials during the course

  • Setting up and running the monthly SMASH (self-management and self-help) coffee mornings for the programme

  • Attend events to promote the programme

  • Administrate tasks including: taking feedback from participants over the telephone, via email or face to face
