An exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint a Specialty Doctor to join our medical team. The post is funded for up to 4 days/8 PA sessions, plus up to 1.5 PA’s on call. There is flexibility on hours between 4-8 sessions per week depending on the candidate. You will provide holistic patient focused care and to work as an integrated member of the multidisciplinary team. You will be supported in your decision making by the Palliative Care Consultants.

 

What is the role?

 

The Specialty Doctor is responsible for providing palliative care to patients within the In-Patient Unit and occasional medical support to the Day Therapy Unit.

The prime purpose is to provide holistic patient focused care and to work as an integrated member of the multidisciplinary team. You will be supported in your decision making by the Palliative Care Consultants.

A key element will be to contribute to the provision of non-resident out of hour’s medical cover for the hospice ensuring medical support for all services is available 24 hours a day. This comprises a 1 in 4 weeknight and a 1 in 4 weekend on call (Friday 5pm- Monday 9am). During weekend on calls there is an expectation that the doctor will do a ward round of inpatients and admit patients from the community or hospital settings if needed.

The Specialty Doctor is required to plan and organise their own day to day work and make medical decisions to support in-patients and very occasionally day patients with complex and often rapidly changing palliative care needs. Consultant support is available at all times.

Staff are encouraged to develop relevant professional skills and expertise. In-house education sessions occur regularly. Study leave and funding is available to attend agreed external educational events.

About you:

  • Primary medical qualification

  • Full GMC registration

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience post F2

  • Demonstrate an interest in palliative care

  • Caring and empathetic approach with patients and families

  • Understanding and experience of clinical governance

  • Ability to supervise more junior members of the medical team

  • Enthusiasm for informally teaching and providing educational support to junior colleagues, including doctors and medical students

  • Commitment to continuing personal development

     

    It would also be great if you have:

  • Experience in working effectively within a specialist palliative care unit/ hospice and within a multidisciplinary team

     

    A little bit about us

    We are an independent hospice supporting a community of 300,000 people in Swindon, Marlborough and North Wiltshire, and the villages of Lechlade and Fairford in Gloucestershire.

    The unit has 16 in-patient beds (12 currently open). Two beds are funded by Great Western Hospital for end of life care; one bed is funded by NHS Swindon for patients eligible for continuing healthcare funding. One bed is used for a respite service. One bed is a rapid access bed for imminently dying people. The emphasis is on the delivery of specialist palliative care utilising a wide range of specialist skills. Within the Hospice premises there is also a day care facility. Outpatient facilities offer the opportunity for outpatient assessment and treatment by a variety of members of the team.
