An exciting opportunity has arisen for dynamic, engaged and committed Fellow in environmentally sustainable anaesthesia to work in a specific role with-in the peri-operative and critical care directorate at the Freeman Hospital. This is a National Fellowship jointly organised between Newcastle upon Tyne NHS Trust, The Association of Anaesthetists and the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare and will involve working with all 3 organisations. 

The aim of the fellowship is to improve the evidence base underpinning environmentally sustainable anaesthesia, establish what best practice looks like, define and remove barriers to best practice implementation and to share the findings with the wider anaesthetic and medical communities. All clinical work will be within Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals. 

This post would suit anaesthetic trainees who have a special interest in sustainable healthcare. Ideally applicants will have completed Foundation Training and Core Training. This post will provide a solid basis from which to apply for an ST or Consultant post. 

Post is available from 4 August 2020 for 12 months. 

The post will include clinical duties in anaesthesia and critical care and the successful individual will be expected to take part in the on call rota at a level suitable to their clinical experience. 

The Association of Anaesthetists

The Association of Anaesthetists is a professional membership organisation for anaesthetists in Great Britain, Ireland and overseas. Membership is open to those doctors practising or training in anaesthesia, or allied medical disciplines, principally intensive care and pain medicine. It was founded in 1932 by Dr Henry W Featherstone and today represents the life-changing, life-saving profession of anaesthesia – by supporting, informing and inspiring a worldwide community of over 10,000 members. The Association of Anaesthetists is the brand name used to refer to both the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain & Ireland and its related charity,AAGBI Foundation.

The Association has a broad constitution that enables it to promote and advance education, safety and research in anaesthesia, as well as the professional aspects of the specialty and the welfare of individual anaesthetists. The Association has been responsible for initiating or promoting all major developments in British and Irish anaesthesia, and continues to thrive. It issues and revises guidelines and advice, and encourages and supports specialist societies. The Association continues to raise the profile and enhance the image of anaesthetists to the public.

The objects for which the Association is established are to:

  • advance and improve patient care and safety in the field of anaesthesia and disciplines allied to anaesthesia;
  • promote and support education and research in anaesthesia, medical specialties allied to anaesthesia and science relevant to anaesthesia;
  • represent, protect, support and advance the interests of its members; and
  • encourage and support worldwide co-operation between anaesthetists. 

The Association recognises that our actions have an impact on the environment around us and regards sustainability and climate change as a key strategic issue. It first established an environmental task group in 2013 and now has an Environment and Sustainability Committee. The Centre for Sustainable Healthcare

An independent charity, CSH has been leading efforts to incorporate the values of environmental sustainability into the health sector since its establishment in 2008. It has a particular focus on engaging those in the front-line of patient care and promoting the concept of “sustainable clinical practice” and has developed a “SusQI” framework for integrating sustainability into Quality Improvement methodology.

CSH is respected nationally for a specialty-led approach combining research with support for local change, underpinned by wider engagement with patients, and relevant industry and clinical bodies. As part of this programme, CSH has partnered with NHS bodies and specialty organisations to create Sustainable Specialty Fellowships, and has managed full- and part-time fellows in a range of specialties.

Fellows are supported by a range of in-house resources including training materials, web-based networking tools, online case libraries, and a Sustainable Action Planning toolkit for clinical teams.

In this programme, CSH will provide training days covering topics such as introduction to sustainable healthcare, carbon footprinting in healthcare, sustainability in quality improvement, sustainable leadership. In addition, the Fellow will receive educational supervision and project guidance from CSH’s Medical Director, Dr. Frances Mortimer.

All successful candidates who require a DBS for the post they have been offered pay for their DBS certificate.  The method of payment is a salary deduction from your first month’s pay.  You will be required to sign a DBS payment form which will be issued to you as part of your recruitment process.
