Would you like to experience different clinical environments within gastroenterology as part of a structured programme of rotation?

We are pioneering an exciting & novel rotational programme within gastroenterology, tailored for band 5 to 6 nurses (dependent on experience).

Are you looking to enhance your skills, resilience and knowledge, to develop your career into more senior roles?

We have three core nursing roles acrossgastroenterology, in bowel cancer screening (BCS), on our gastroenterology ward and endoscopy department. The Successful Candidates will embark on an exciting and novel rotation programme across our gastroenterology department, including the sub-specialties of Hepatology, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and Nutrition. You will be supported by our Sisters, Ward Manager, Matrons, Clinical Specialists and the Nursing Practice and Development Team.

This rotation programme has been developed at the RD&E NHS FT for experienced Band 5 to 6 Registered Nurses (dependant on experience). The programme comprises of three placements of eight months each, where you will be supported to achieve specific learning objectives, whether that means being supported to attain specialist nursing knowledge or developing your management skills. On completion of the programme there will be opportunity for three permanent posts in:


Bowel cancer screening

Gastroenterology ward

    • Gastroenterology specific and specialist nursing/practitioner courses at level 6 and 7. For example; The Liverpool John Moores University – Specialist Bowel Cancer Screening Programme or Principles of gastro-intestinal nursing at Plymouth University
    • A fully funded mentorship/assessors’ qualification at a local university
    • A management module including a work-based project

You will be mentored and supported through the rotation programme with ample opportunities for training and development, both internally and externally. We have very close links and relationships with a number of universities and there will be an expectation that as part of the programme, you will undertake one or more CPD courses. This will develop both your gastroenterology nursing skills and support your revalidation.

The 24 month rotation will consist of three 8 month placements, where you will work as a core team member on Okement ward and Endoscopy. On each 8 month palcement you will be supported to learn, develop or consolidate skills. The placements will include approximately half your time spent with our gastroenterology sub-specialties of IBD, Hepatology, Bowel Cancer Screening and Nutrition where they offer a range of specialist clinical knowledge and experience.

Once you have gained this invaluable experience over the 2 years, we will then have further opportunities to speak to you about in order to support and progress your career and development into more senior roles.

At the end of the programme, you will either be able to choose to continue your preferred clinical area for your permanent post at the RD&E or have the option of continuing on in a different specialty (subject to availability).
