What would you do with the time?

Working an average of 30 hours a week will give you this time and it will be structured around your availability by mutual agreement whilst being reassured you will be supported in achieving your personal and professional goals.

Sitting in Clinical Biochemistry you will be responsible, under appropriate supervision, on rotation, for the day-to-day operation of the laboratory reporting system. Having clinical oversight and interpretation aspects of the service as well as giving advice on the results produced by the laboratory so that it might achieve the objectives of efficient and effective patient care, within Blood Sciences.

In conjunction with the departmental clinical lead you will lead the department in specific areas, enhance the service and participate in the provision of out of hours clinical on-call cover if you hold FRCPath.

You will be applying your expertise, to participate in all aspects of service provision, following training, alongside a commitment to be involved in the ongoing teaching/training activities of the department, giving something back and supporting those curious to learn more.

A little about us:

The laboratory provides a wide range of assays with a throughput of approximately 3 million investigations per year. You will work in a purpose built environment, well-equipped with Roche Cobas 8000 and Integra analysers, HPLC and Sebia electrophoresis testing for respective management of its’ porphyria and myeloma screening services.

The department also provides serology investigations into infectious diseases and offers a tertiary Porphyria Reference Service to laboratories across the UK.

Bedford Hospital NHS Trust provides a range of hospital care services to over 270,000 people living predominantly in north and mid Bedfordshire and is the vascular hub for Bedfordshire.

There are approximately 425 inpatient beds of which 44 are maternity and 10 are critical care, plus 28 day-case beds within the hospital.

The hospital provides a full range of district general hospital services. Bedford has excellent road and rail links, with the hospital being situated only a short distance from the main railway station.

An excellent choice of schools and sporting facilities are also available. There are currently plans for the Bedford Pathology department to merge with the Luton and Dunstable Pathology service to improve the overall reliance of each partner service.
