Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust manages Leighton Hospital in Crewe, Victoria Infirmary in Northwich and Elmhurst Intermediate Care Centre in Winsford. Following an NHSI initiative to establish 29 Pathology networks across England the University Hospital of North Midlands is currently working closely with Mid and East Cheshire NHS Trusts to establish a Pathology network across Staffordshire and Cheshire.


Mid-Cheshire Hospitals NHS Trust is a busy district general hospital situated in the heart of the Cheshire countryside. The department forms part of the Division of Diagnostics and Clinical Support Services and is focused on continuously improving the services offered to our patients. This is facilitated through by continued professional development, audit and research.

A key element of the Trust’s Clinical Services Strategy is the expansion of Cardiac and Respiratory services in response to the needs of the local population. To enhance services offered to patients the Trust works in partnership with Royal Stoke University Hospital to provide specialist cardiac and vascular diagnostics.

An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, highly motivated Band 6 Cardiac Physiologist to join our established team in providing a range of high quality, non-invasive cardiac investigations within the Cardio-Respiratory Department.

You will be expected to be fully competent in your field and with extensive experience in working unsupervised in a wide range of non-invasive cardiac investigations including analysis and exercise tolerance testing along with reporting of results and clinical interpretation.

You must be well versed in national best practice, quality reporting and will be passionate about promoting this ethos within the department.

Applicants will have a BSc in Clinical Physiology or equivalent level with appropriate experience, RCCP registration, and have relevant post registration experience within a specialised area. A qualification in pacing (BHRS or equivalent) Echocardiography (BSE) or Clinical Vascular Scientist accreditation is desirable although not essential.

The post will be based in the Cardio-Respiratory department at Mid Cheshire Hospitals Foundation Trust.

The department provides the following services:

  • Full range of non-invasive cardiac diagnostics, including ECG and ambulatory monitoring and analysis.
  • Bradycardia and CRT pacemaker follow up and Pre-Operative Assessment Clinics
  • Implantable Loop Recorder / ICD Interrogation.
  • Echocardiography including TOE, bubble study, Valve clinic and a Stress Echo service
  • Physiologist and Doctor led exercise tolerance testing.
  • Full lung function studies
  • Spirometry with reversibility
  • Physiologist led Exercise Induced Asthma testing
  • Overnight pulse oximetry and limited sleep studies.
  • A new sleep service is currently being developed within the department
  • A full range of routine and complex vascular ultrasound investigations in a dedicated vascular ultrasound suite

You should be able to work using your own initiative as well as be a team player, have good communication skills combined with a pleasant, outgoing manner. You will work closely with technical, medical and administrative staff, ensuring patient confidentiality, comfort and safety at all times.

Computer knowledge is essential including all windows applications as well as experience of databases and specialist software. Competencies in the use of equipment and reporting systems will be provided in-house.

Department staff currently work flexible hours over a 5 day working week with weekend work included on a rotational system. However a 7 day service provision is being considered to support delivery of seven day working.
