Thornford Park Hospital, part of Elysium Healthcare, is an independent 129 bedded hospital set in 23 acres of parkland on the outskirts of Newbury, Berkshire (close to the Hampshire borders).

We provide services for male patients detained under the Mental Health Act (1983) who require care in conditions of medium and low security. Our service users, many of whom have forensic histories, require long-term treatment and rehabilitation and present with multiple problems, challenging and high risk behaviour and complex care needs. We also have a 10-bedded PICU providing holistic assessment and treatment for males experiencing crisis.

In January 2019, Thornford Park opened a 14-bedded low secure service for male patients with Autistic Spectrum Disorders, commissioned by NHS England. We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic Speech and Language Therapist to work as part of the Multi-Disciplinary team and to support in the development of this exciting new service.

In addition, the post holder would have the opportunity to work with patients on a new Medium Secure Service for adult males with a Learning Disability.

 

 

Job Title: Lead Speech and Language Therapist

Annual salary: equivalent to NHS Band 7

Hours per week: Negotiable up to full-time

 

 

JOB SUMMARY

 

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to recruit to the position of Lead Speech and Language Therapist to join the Department of Psychological Therapies at Thornford Park Hospital; we require you to be registered with the HCPC.

 

This is an exciting and unique opportunity to help develop a specialised 14-bedded low secure service for males with a primary diagnosis of ASD in addition to supporting a new 10-bedded Medium Secure service for male patients with a Learning Disability. The post holder will form an integral part of the multi-disciplinary team, providing consultation, assessment, and intervention to the service.

We are looking for a Speech and Language Therapist with experience of working with adults with ASD/Learning Disability and/or forensic mental health experience to join our friendly team in secure services. Secure services has a team of therapists including psychologists, art therapists, dramatherapists, and trainee/assistant psychologists with expertise in working with people with a wide range of presenting difficulties, including violent offender, sex offending, substance use problems, personality disorder, and enduring mental health difficulties.

Training opportunities will be available for the successful candidate along with monthly clinical supervision and management supervision.

 

 

As a Speech and Language Therapist you will be:

 

  • Autonomous in managing your own caseload, which will involve working with complex service-users.

  • Attending regular clinical and service development meetings, such as MDT’s, CTR’s, referrals, and other hospital-wide meetings

  • Be an integral part of the Multi-Disciplinary Team

  • Carrying out Speech and Language assessments for individual with ASD/LD, and making recommendations for how to best support their communication needs

  • Providing Speech and Language interventions to patients on both ASD and LD services.

  • Maintaining monthly clinical supervision as well as regular line-management supervision

  • Providing professional advice in finding resolutions to problems/challenges – with the emphasis on improving service-user experience.

  • Providing both written & verbal contributions to MDT & CTR process

  • Supporting the MDT in the development and review of care plans

  • Liaising with external agencies to support patient’s care pathways

  • Contributing to professional development within the team

  • Contributing to teaching around ASD/LD and PBS.

  • Contributing to audit and research as directed by the line manager
