We have a brand new opportunity within West Herts Children’s Services for band 5 and band 6 nurses. We are in the process of building a Paediatric Assessment Unit (PAU) that will be co-located with the Children’s Emergency Department. We anticipate this will be open in spring.

The Band 6 Junior Sister/Charge Nurse position will be a Fixed Term contract of 1 year.

The Band 5 Staff Nurse position is substantive.

The successful candidate will then be part of implementing our new PAU model of care. This will be in the form of helping to create nurse led pathways, as well as ensuring the best and most effective process for a smooth running PAU area.

Our PAU provides an opportunity to care for acutely ill children that may need a period of assessment following admission through ED prior to discharge, caring for GP referrals, and onward referral to the paediatric team. You will monitor, treat and then either admit the child to the ward or discharge home. In addition you will gain experience in nursing acutely ill children in emergency situations.

The candidate may be asked to cross cover in Paediatric Emergency Department or other paediatric area in busy times or if staff are required to be redeployed. This will provide further experience and will support your own further development in Paediatric emergency settings. We also have a robust team of Paediatric Emergency Nurse Practitioners and are developing a Paediatric Advanced Nurse Practitioner service. We take pride in the fact that they all have been developed internally by sending them on appropriate training modules. This is an area of development we are opening out to our Paediatric emergency/PAU nurses.

Paediatrics achieved an overall ‘Good’ rating in our 2017 CQC inspection, providing outstanding pathways of care, and innovations within the Children’s Emergency Department. We are a friendly dedicated team of Paediatric Nurses and Paediatric consultants. The department is committed to continuous improvements in the service and benefits from currently having a good Paediatric Emergency Nurse Practitioner service.
